MUST BE A US CITIZEN
We are looking for an individual who likes to explore and build with their hands demonstrating a curious propensity for engineering. As a Senior Engineer at MAPC, your role will be to lead one or more of MAPC's functional design programs. Maritime Applied Physics Corporation (MAPC) has offices in Brunswick, Maine and Baltimore, Maryland. This position is located in the Brunswick, Maine office. The engineers and technicians in this office are working on R&D projects, ship design projects, component fabrication, field support, and logistics support of fielded MAPC systems. The successful candidate will have strong engineering, organizational, and management skills with a demonstrated track record of attracting and performing technical work.
We have openings for two to three experienced mechanical engineers of varying experience. The successful candidates must have:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant technical discipline from an ABET-accredited school
- 7 to 10 years' experience as a mechanical engineer with an emphasis on marine systems, systems engineering, uncrewed systems, test and evaluation, or related topics. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated project management and/or team leadership experience on small to medium projects.
- At least three to eight years of 3D CAD modeling experience
- Good communications and organizational skills
- U.S. Citizenship
- Ability and willingness to receive and maintain a US Government security clearance
The ideal candidate should also have one or more of the following:
- A high level of mechanical aptitude and intuition with experience in the design, testing, and production of complex electromechanical or robotic systems
- Design engineering experience with a wide variety of components, structures, and systems
- Strong SolidWorks 3D CAD skills
- Experience or willingness to work in a rapid prototyping and testing environment
- Experience or interest in maritime activities, structures, and/or vehicles. Any prior work involving selection of auxiliary system components, hull-outfit equipment development, experience with Classification Society processes, and evaluation of system performance when integrating marine vessels should be particularly noted.
- Experience coordinating and working with machine shops, welders, fabrication technicians, and other engineering staff, including electrical and controls engineers.
- Small to medium project management experience
- An existing US Government security clearance
- Technical curiosity and the desire to conceptualize, design, build and test a wide range of ever-evolving projects being implemented from the seafloor to aerospace systems
· An ability to travel on an occasional basis. The expected level of travel would be roughly 30 days per year, subject to increase or decrease depending upon business needs. Applicants should be able to board and traverse boats and ships.
The employee in this position will be responsible for performing the following tasks-
Technical Execution:
- Solve straightforward technical problems independently
- Solve complex technical problems with advice and guidance from Principal Engineers when necessary
- Manage small to medium-sized projects
- Move freely between first principles analysis and complex software "canned" solution analysis. Has a strong understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each and knows when and where to use them.
- Maintain an intuition of when a technical problem is converging in a positive spiral and recognize when to change approach for improved results
- Develop design data ranging from fabrication drawings through system descriptions / one-lines, technical reports, and customer presentations
Technical Project Management:
- Plan, review, and control the execution of all levels of project elements including technical execution, scope control, budgets, and schedules.
- Coordinate project-level work efforts within MAPC including directing engineers, interfacing with technical personnel for the fabrication, assembly, and testing of hardware as necessary.
- Work with project sponsor representatives to meet their expectations and to limit scope creep and other external factors that lead to uncompensated efforts.
- Work with sponsors to develop follow on and new efforts that are mutually beneficial.
Future work initiatives:
- Coordinate with Program Managers to pursue projects that are strategic in producing improved MAPC capabilities including technical expertise and manufacturing and research facilities.
- Lead teams in proposal writing and contract negotiation efforts.
- Develop technical approaches and budget and schedule estimates for solicitations under consideration.
MAPC is seeking long-term employees who are looking for a career growth path with the company and are willing to take on a diverse set of engineering challenges. The job offers opportunities to hone your design skills and expand them to additional technical areas, develop more advanced modeling and analysis skills, and be part of a fast-moving, energetic, closely-knit team.
