This position serves as a technical resource person providing guidance, on-going education and training to employees of the department, under limited supervision. This position will provide input into the development of procedures and protocol. Ensures compliance and provides interpretation of procedural intent as requested and/or required. This position will monitor the workflow and staff performance to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures. Guides the daily activities of the group to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations. Maintains workflow efficiency and turnaround expectations. Provides input to evaluate staff performance, which includes performance reviews and disciplinary actions.
Responsibilities:- (40%)*, a or b or c a. Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist: Works within the department to analyze and process biological specimens, organize workload and set-up test procedures. Monitors productivity and work flow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile. b. Cytology Technical Specialist: Screen, interpret and sign out negative reports for gynecological cytology preparations. Process, screen and interpret for non-gynecological cytology preparations. Assists clinicians with fine needle (FNA) biopsies as well as prepares screens, interprets the FNA material. Works within the Cytology and Histology departments to accomplish daily work. Monitors productivity and work flow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile. c. Histology Technical Specialist: Processes Pathology samples by embedding, cutting and immunohistochemical staining. Assists Pathologists with frozen and gross duties as needed. Able to perform all other duties listed in Histotechnologist job description. Works within the Cytology and Histology departments to accomplish daily work. Monitors productivity and work flow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.
- (20%)* Evaluates appropriateness of patient and quality control results and enters into the Laboratory information system. Strictly follows critical notification policy when results meet stated criteria.
- (20%)* Maintains inventory and reorders reagents. Stocks shelves. Disposes of biohazards, chemicals, etc. in a safe manner following department procedure. Maintains and troubleshoots instruments.
- (20%)* Serves as the technical resource person in matters related to equipment: quality control, calibration, maintenance, trouble-shooting and inventory. Routinely provides input for updates to standard operating procedures. Assures that routine procedures are in compliance with all applicable regulations. Provides practical, hands-on training for new employees and when procedural changes occur.
- MT: Medical Technologist ASCP
- Equivalent Experience: MT- Within 6 months of hire or transfer, must hold and maintain an active national MLS certification.CT-Cytotechnologist ASCP or equivalent required.HT-Histotechnologist ASCP or equivalent required.
- Education: Bachelors Degree
- Equivalent Experience: A bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology or a bachelors degree in a science or health related field with national MLS certification may also be considered. Required for MT's and CT's.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitors compliance with supply and usage guidelines.
- Provides upkeep of departmental inventory of supplies and requests.
- Assist the Manager to improve performance of the department.
- Provides Manager with input for scheduling and staffing needs.
- Supervision exercised: May provide leadership in the absence of the Manager.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- For High complexity tests, this position may serve as a General supervisor (CLIA definition) and for moderately complexity testing may serve as a Technical Consultant (TC) defined in laboratory policy, to ensure:
Remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications; Patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system functions properly;
Orientation is provided to all testing personnel; and annual personnel performance evaluations and documentation of testing personnel performance competency.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
- Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.
- Two to three years progressively responsible experience as a MT, CT or HT.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge.
- Written and interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
