About the Job
**Position will be hybrid, and will require new hire to come on site at times**
This position is responsible for billing and follow-up of insurance and self-pay accounts, payment posting, and charging issues, and general appropriateness of account balances. It includes verification of benefits and communication with insurance companies and patients. It requires a broad knowledge of the hospital billing, follow-up and collection activities, charge review, and insurance and patient payment posting.
Responsibilities:(25%)* Performs functions of a Biller, including but not limited to:
Processes insurance claims on a timely basis.
Processes additional billings as required to obtain maximum payment on account.
Performs other duties as assigned.
(25%)* Performs functions of a Patient Account Technician, including but not limited to:
Investigate charge ticket discrepancies as needed.
Processes insurance claims as required.
Maintains accuracy of insurance and patient account status.
Maintains positive customer relations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
(25%)* Performs functions of a Patient Account Representative, including but not limited to:
Is accountable for accuracy/completeness of self-pay billing process.
Collects coinsurance, deductibles, and self-pay balances as required.
Processes referrals to outside agencies.
Processes required adjustments/credits to maintain accuracy of account payment information.
Completes functions required for payment posting.
Performs other duties as assigned.
(25%)* Performs functions of a Cashier. Including but not limited to:
Post payments to patient accounts on a daily basis.
Balances cash posting daily.
Prepares cashier’s bank deposit in timely fashion.
Performs other duties as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responds to correspondence appropriate to area of responsibility.
Investigates and responds to account activity for timely intervention in payment process.
Interacts with staff/customers to provide insurance information.
Maintains accuracy of insurance and patient account status.
Maintains positive customer relations.
Operates computer.
Prepare and process work for daily computer input.
Answers phone calls in a friendly and cooperative manner.
Responds to all questions regarding payment and account status in courteous manner.
Communicates with patients/guarantors to obtain payment through entire patient care/payment cycle.
Explains and applies hospital credit and financial assistance policies in interactions with hospital customers.
Processes insurance claims as needed on a timely basis.
Processes additional billings as required to obtain maximum payment on account.
Posts payments to patient accounts on a daily basis.
Prepares bank deposit in timely fashion.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Must use standard office and data processing equipment as necessary in the performance of duties.
Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement as required by the Hospital and the job description.
Understands and is accountable for Hospital’s customer service standards.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
