The Senior Powertrain Manager is able to self-conduct a full engine/driveline development (hardware and software), if required, to match final product’s needs. That could start from a concept to follow the design of needed components to the assembly phase, by guiding the Powertrain Technicians. For engine related development projects, position will be in charge of defining an engine dyno test plan, to run the tests, to tune the engine as required and to analyze results.
Position will be actively engaged in the initial build, repairs, ongoing maintenance, pre-event testing and event support for all of Vermont SportsCar’s tasks pertaining to engines and driveline. The Senior Powertrain Engineer is required to support the engines on tests and events to ensure performance and reliability. The Senior Powertrain Engineer adapts to a fast-paced and changing motorsports environment and works well with limited supervision. Specific tasks will include, but not be limited to, assist technicians in the assembly of engines, teardown and inspection of engines, installation on the dyno, preparing event spares, build and inspect turbochargers and related components. The Senior Powertrain Engineer will coordinate the workload of the Powertrain Department to meet the required deadlines.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist the Technical Director in the management of all activities associated with design, development, and build of Vermont SportsCar racing engines and drivelines.
- Assist in implementation of methods to track and record performance, complete maintenance requirements of key components to maximize performance and reliability and minimize ongoing replacement costs.
- Plan, implement, and monitor the progress of work assignments and special projects as they pertain to personnel assigned to the Powertrain Department.
- Confirm proper car installation, complete pre-event engine validation tests in the workshop and on the chassis dyno.
- Complete engine dyno tests including break-in, performance, and development tests.
- Manage engine calibration and logged data storage.
- Prepare engine assemblies or individual components pertaining to the engine.
- Assist teardown and inspect engines for overhaul.
- Inspect and rebuild turbochargers, wastegates and associated components.
- Train engine technicians as needed ranging from new hire, equipment usage and shop standards.
- Ensure build sheets and parts usage is tracked according to requirements from engineers.
- Communicate any issues or discrepancies to engineers in order to improve build documentation, CAD assemblies and part usage.
- Assist rally/RX, fabrication and engineering technicians as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Parts ordering for this department.
- Establish budgets, for this department, as required by the Technical Director.
- Effectively manage costs and identify opportunities for increased efficiencies.
. Participates in the managing and training of Engine Shop personnel.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Superior verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Superior managerial and diplomacy skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Proficient in specific software for engine calibration and data analysis.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Education and Experience:
Demonstrated experience as an automotive and/or race engine specialist .
5 or more years experience in a motorsport environment is preferred.
5 years’ experience in assembly techniques and development of high-performance race engines is preferred.
Excellent organizational skills with a high degree of initiative and flexibility.
Strong oral and written communications capabilities are imperative.
Domestic and International overnight travel is required.As a minimum, a High School Diploma or GED is required along with a certificate of completion or diploma from a recognized Technical or Trade School specializing in Automotive Repair and/or a related trade.
Proven ability to manage personnel, manage and schedule multiple tasks and work comfortably in a fast-paced, often-changing, professional motorsports environment.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this position, individuals may frequently be required to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; regularly required to talk and hear.
- The individual must also be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus as required.
