About the Job
The location of this position is flexible and can be performed from any of our Apex offices (Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, ND or Detroit Lakes or St. Cloud, MN) or remotely within 250 miles an Apex office. This position is considered a strategic hire and will provide an opportunity to develop a structural-bridge team by expanding Apex’s transportation capabilities to public and private clients. This person will report directly to Apex’s Transportation Sector Leader. The candidate will be expected to attend in person, key business, client, and project related meetings, including personnel meetings if they are a direct supervisor. Key responsibilities will include being involved with technical work and managing projects requiring bridge designs and drainage structures for transportation and water resource projects. This position will also require participating in the development of new opportunities, prepare effective technical proposals, participate in project pursuit interviews and actively collaborate on projects with other project managers.
Qualification Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (civil, structural), with 10 years of bridge engineering experience.
- A licensed engineer to practice structural engineering specific to bridge design in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire.
- Experience with transportation projects and public agencies located in North Dakota and Minnesota is preferred.
- Experience with in-service bridge inspection is preferred.
- Proficient using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
- Must be detail orientated, self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain one.
- Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
- Required to regularly work in an outdoors environment.
- Required to lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.
- May require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform some of the typical tasks and duties.
- Must be able to work scheduled and required hours.

- Independently perform bridge engineering related calculations, analysis, and design tasks.
- Independently write technical specifications, reports, and other correspondence to a variety of audiences.
- Lead the design efforts in the role of engineer-of-record on a variety of bridge project types.
- Perform independent checking of the design work of other team members.
- Mentor and oversee the work of less experienced bridge team members.
- Efficiently work with technicians to assemble complete and accurate engineering plans.
- Work efficiently to meet deadlines and complete projects within a given amount of time.
- Demonstrate a strong ability to meet project budgets and schedules.
- Expertly employ a variety of design standards related to the bridge industry.
- Participate in business development and marketing activities related to bridge work with existing clients and potential new clients.
- Prepares technical proposals for project pursuits with other project managers and market leaders.
- Contributes to project pursuit efforts by participating in interviews for specific projects that have a bridge component.
- Participates in transportation team, management, and company staff meetings and seminars when appropriate.
- Assists with the development of budgets for bridge engineering elements of projects.
- Responsible for hiring and recruiting other bridge staff as needed and approved by the Sector Leader.
- Effective communication skills with the public will be required in settings such as public meetings, informational meetings, construction notifications, etc.
- This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls.
- Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
- Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
- Travel and out of town stays may be required; may work overtime especially during deadlines for submittals.
- The Structural-Bridge Engineer may assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Sector Market Leader.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
