As a Staff RF Power Amplifier Design Engineer, you will report to the VP of Engineering and be responsible for the development of ultra high-efficiency RF power amplifiers for our cellular base station solutions. Our RF power amplifier technology is at the heart of our system approach to dramatically reduce 5G base station power consumption. This position is based in San Diego, CA or Irvine, CA.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop ultra-high efficiency RF power amplifiers (PAs) for base station solutions
- Design, simulate and debug/evaluate RF PAs and present to peers and stakeholders throughout
- Work with Systems, RF/Analog, Digital and FW engineers to contribute to the complete base station solution
- Support the RF PA design through to volume production
- Document and teach your designs to peers, integrators and users/customers
Job Requirements
- BSEE minimum, MSEE or PhD preferred
- 3-10 years of direct design experience
- Focused experience with the following activities in high-efficiency RF PA development:
- Device selection
- Circuit design
- Linear and nonlinear simulation
- PCB layout and parasitic extraction (EM analysis)
- Lab debug, bring-up and performance optimization
- Knowledge of efficiency enhancement PA architectures such as
- (Multi-level) Doherty
- Outphasing
- Active load modulation
- Envelope Restoration
- Design experience in the 0.5 MHz – 6 GHz range and solid understanding of higher frequency effects
- Solid understanding of device biasing, RF dependencies and (temperature) compensation techniques
- Excellent RF test and measurement skills
- Well-versed in SMT component selection and understanding of impairments
- Understanding of nonlinear effects and compensation methods
- Expert RF design tool as a user
- Solid understanding of transmitter linearization techniques
- Analytical and disciplined problem solver
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
Desirable Skills
- Working knowledge of transmitter linearization algorithms and capabilities
- Custom device process selection, design, and implementation
- Wide exposure to RF passive (distributed) structures
- Keen understanding of the relationships between CW and modulated device operation and performance
- Intimate knowledge of PCB materials for RF design including design, cost, reliability and other tradeoffs
- Good knowledge of RF PA-specific mechanical and thermal management approaches
- Foundry models/PDK installation/use
- Results-oriented with drive to finish
Compensation and Benefits:
At InnoPhase, our compensation package includes base pay and pre-IPO stock options. The base pay range for this role is between $140K-$225K. Your base pay will depend on the market, interview results, skills, qualifications, experience, education, and location.
