About the Job
HILGARTWILSON, an affiliate of Colliers Engineering & Design, is seeking a Staff Scientist II with two to five years of experience to assist in planning and implementing environmental and natural resources projects. This position may be responsible for performing site environmental surveys, preparing technical reports, collecting field data and samples, and interpreting data. This position will work closely with a team of environmental professionals, including engineers, geologists, and GIS specialists. We are looking for an employee to work out of our Phoenix, AZ office.
The position will involve conducting environmental due diligence, environmental site assessments/ property condition assessments, soil and groundwater investigations, and technical report preparation. This position may also support permitting and compliance activities under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act (e.g., jurisdictional/ wetland determinations and permitting), and similar/ related programs, Daily activities may include site reconnaissance, oversight of soil borings/ exploration, collection of soil and groundwater samples, laboratory data management, and report preparation. This position is expected to have a roughly 30% - 70% balance between field and office work which will vary based on project needs. The ideal candidates will have a Bachelor of Science degree in geology, earth science, environmental science, or environmental engineering.
- Conducting investigations related to environmental and geologic evaluations particularly in Arizona, but not limited to this state.
- Interpreting regulations and guidance documents.
- Supervising and documenting field studies.
- Collecting and managing environmental samples.
- Interpreting and compilation of field and laboratory data.
- Performing geologic sampling and logging of data.
- Coordinating and overseeing subcontractors.
- Interacting with state and federal regulators.
- Calibrating, operating, and maintaining field equipment.
- Working in various terrains and environments throughout the year.
- Performing physical tasks in the field which may include regular carrying of equipment (20-50 pounds).
- Extended period of time operating a computer in a stationary position.
- On occasion, could spend full day of working in the field collecting data based on project needs.
- 2-5 years of environmental or geologic consulting experience.
- BS in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science or Environmental/Civil Engineering Geologist-In-Training Certification, a plus.
- OSHA 40 HAZWOPER training with annual 8-hour refreshers.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite; familiarity with ESRI GIS and/or AutoCAD preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-starter and team player.
- Must be able to travel to various project sites.
- Occasional long-distance travel and overnight stays.
- Must be able to walk long distances and navigate rough terrain.
- Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
