JOB TITLE: Street Outreach Specialist.
DEPARTMENT: Outreach/Community Services.
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt (Hourly).
Primary Function:
In keeping with the Mission Statement and Principles of Covenant House, maintains and monitors day to day operations of Outreach under the direction of the Support Services.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Functions as a community liaison through contacting agencies, organizations, and schools.
- Provides workshops to agencies, and coordinate activities provided by outreach staff in the community.
- Drives the Outreach van, providing necessary services to youths in crisis, i.e., counseling, feeding, referral, and transportation. This entails going into the neighborhoods, areas, and places where young people hang out.
- Data Entry in the HMIS reporting system.
- Must be able to work independently and keep the Outreach coordinator completely informed of activities.
- Ensures outreach van is in good running condition, and prepared for daily activities.
- Assist in providing training for staff, volunteers, and ensures that staff receives all agency-required training.
- Maintains a flexible work schedule, which allows supervision of outreach.
- Upon request of the outreach Coordinator, one must travel to other activities/cities to perform outreach activities.
- Develops and presents workshops throughout the community on homeless prevention.
- Attends community networking meetings of homeless and youth service providers.
- Orders food and necessary supplies for Outreach and Community Services.
- Performs other job duties as assigned by supervisor.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services field preferred.
- Two (2) years experience working with runaway and homeless youth; experience in street outreach preferred.
- Proven ability to provide supervision and training.
- Must be able to work flexible hours.
- Must be able to handle and deal with stressful situations and conditions.
- Must have a positive attitude and be outgoing.
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in both extreme hot and cold conditions.
- Must be able to read, do arithmetic, and compile statistics.
- Must be able to walk a flight of stairs, walk long distances, and over a variety of surfaces.
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy materials over a period of a day.
- Must have good vision in daylight and at night.
- Must be willing to drive to assigned sites.
- Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License and driving record acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier.

Covenant House Texas (CHT) opened its doors in 1983 to provide shelter for homeless, abused and abandoned youth ages 18 – 24. After more than 35 years of service, CHT offers an extensive continuum of care model for homeless youth including mental health and substance abuse counseling, educational and vocational training, transitional and permanent living programs, street outreach and prevention, pastoral ministry and parenting classes in addition to providing the basic necessities of food, clothing, medical care and safe shelter from the streets for youth in crisis.
