What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems has an immediate need for a Structural Bridge Engineer to join our Schaumberg, IL or Chicago, IL office. This position is a design role for all aspects of structural analysis, design and plan preparation for bridges, culverts, facilities, buildings, and various structural projects. Our public and private clients vary from federal, state, and local governments; railroads and transit agencies; and collar county DOTs. Projects include new structure design, as well as the inspection and rehabilitation or repair of existing structures, for both highway and railroad. Candidates will be responsible for the design of projects, field bridge inspections, monitoring and adhering to budgets and schedules, performing QC or QA reviews, and working with other staff in completing projects. Applicants must possess strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to travel for projects site visits, the ability to work in the field conducting bridge inspections up to 10% of the time and must be able to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects.

Primary Responsibilities (others may be included):

• Prepares or preferably directs; Preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, and designs for difficult projects; Construction management tasks.
• Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation, and development of novel concepts and approaches.
• Organizes and develops project team to execute specific phases or aspects of project such as technical studies, project design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and project inspection. Must be able to delegate.
• Reviews project design for general compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
• Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and manpower, resolving engineering design problems.
• Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
• Shows understanding of team management, develops project scope of work, estimating manpower needs, prepare schedules, and tracks project progress.
• Assures that the project is completed within the allocated period of time and within the budget that has been assigned.
• Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside their organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to the field.
• Develops and presents proposals to clients in association with the Client Managers.
• Directs the inspection of construction site to monitor progress and ensure general conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction and safety standards.
• Plans and executes project meeting. May negotiate a difficult project issue with the client, such as scope changes or schedule acceleration.
• Assures the project meets quality control and quality assurance guidelines.
• Interprets changes in the contract and advises management on needed changes.
• May contribute to client marketing meeting.
• Maintains professional, technical, and supervisory skills by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

What you bring to our firm:

• Bachelor’s degree in civil and/or structural engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET-accredited university or college.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in structural design, inspections, rehabilitation, and evaluation of bridges along with the preparation of load ratings, construction documents, specifications and estimates.
• Professional Engineer(P.E.) (civil) or Structural Engineer license in the State of Illinois (or other state with the ability to become licensed in Illinois through comity or reciprocity within 6 months).
• Familiarity with structural programs such as STAAD, RISA, MDX, AASHTOWare BrR, LEAP and Microsoft Suite.
• Experience with Illinois Department of Transportation standards and requirements for structures (IDOT Bridge Manual).
• Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.
• Individuals should have experience in reading plans and shop drawings.
• Team oriented engineer with strong communication skills.
• Able and willing to travel within the continental United States
• Physically capable of performing field work including working at heights, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
• Valid Driver’s License

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:

• The preferred candidate will have a structural engineering background, knowledge of MicroStation and experience with structural engineering design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Individuals should have experience in reading plans and shop drawings, and evaluating contractor compliance with construction plans and specifications.
• Experience with Bentley Open Bridge Modeler
• Familiarity with structural/bridge design process using any or all of the following:
  • AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
  • IDOT Bridge Design Manual
  • Illinois Tollway Design Manual
  • AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering
• Masters in Structural Engineering a plus
