What you'll be challenged to do:
TranSystems’ Schaumburg, Illinois office has an immediate opening for an experienced Bridge Inspection Team Leader/Bridge Engineer. This position is open to engineers from 3 to 10 years of experience and includes inspection of bridges along with opportunity for the preparation of load ratings, structural design, rehabilitation, construction documents, specifications, and estimates. Day to day assignments and technical guidance will be provided by current staff Project Managers. Assignments will involve travel within the continental United States. TranSystems has a National Bridge Inspection Practice, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work at the National level for agencies in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Texas, California, and others as we grow.
The right candidate should be enthusiastic and passionate about focusing on the inspection and evaluation of in-service structures. There are opportunities to be trained and/or join TranSystems’ growing National Rope Access Team. There are also opportunities to be involved in TranSystems' UAS (drone) inspection program.
General Duties & Responsibilities include the following:
- Performing bridge inspection assignments on complex and signature structures as well as simple structures which includes documenting clear and detailed inspection findings.
- Preparing concise structure inspection evaluation reports
- Assisting with the planning and preparation of field inspections, business proposals, cost proposals, and safety plans.
- Performing load rating analyses.
- Assists others in analyzing information and data to perform inspection/design tasks.
- Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
- Responsible for accuracy of engineering design, reports, load ratings, and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
- Research design options and document findings for Senior Project Engineer.
- Stays informed with code requirements, state inspection manuals, and relevant manuals/resources\
- Keeps Senior Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
What you bring to our firm:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil and/or structural engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET-accredited university or college
- Completion of the Engineering-in-Training exam is required.
- Individuals should have experience in reading plans and shop drawings
- Team oriented engineer with strong communication skills.
- Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), and experience with engineering design packages such as AutoCAD (desirable), MicroStation (required), AASHTO BrR. Staad.Pro, MathCAD, LUSAS and/or other structural analysis software systems.
- Able and willing to travel within the continental United States
- Physically capable of performing field work including working at heights, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
- Experience with the operation of bucket trucks, manlifts, and under bridge inspection vehicles (snoopers).
- Valid Driver’s License

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:
- Rope access experience or an interest in learning rope access techniques (SPRAT, IRATA)
- Intimate experience with Microsoft Excel including basic programming ability
- Proficient in Microsoft Work and technical writing
- Completion of the following: NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130055) and NHI Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130078)
- Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois or possess an NCEES Record

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and drive a car. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
