Overview:Lead in the analysis, design, and inspection of waterfront and heavy industrial engineering projects that are broad and varied in nature, requiring application of technical codes, standards, and guidelines. Learn and contribute towards the design of a variety of above and below water steel, concrete, and/or timber structures in both shallow and deep-water foundations.
Responsibilities:Leadership and Direction
- Perform work under very limited supervision requiring the need to exercise independent judgement and discretion on a regular or frequent basis.
- Position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but will serve as a lead/resource among team of colleagues in equivalent roles to share technical proficiency, guidance, and mentorship. May occasionally assist in delegation of assignments or provide feedback to managers.
At the Operational and Company Level
- Assist with the marketing of the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.
- Work closely with more senior project team members to learn about and assist with civil/structural engineering work.
Do the Work
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria on complex projects.
- Lead the planning, design, permitting, construction support engineering and management efforts for a variety of structural waterfront and heavy industrial engineering projects.
- Complete engineering design and drawing work using computer aided software.
- Lead in preparing reports and correspondence concerning the direction of assigned projects.
- Direct and perform field structural investigations including underwater inspections with assistance from divers and develop technical reports.
- Perform feasibility studies, structural inspection, structural planning, detailed design, permitting and bidding on a variety of waterfront and heavy industrial structures.
- Conduct frequent site visits or be present on project sites for an extended period (up to twelve months) to monitor construction, lead construction and structural site inspections, and make assessments. Prepare inspection reports.
- Perform office construction support engineering duties such as reviewing drawings and technical submittals.
- Assist in resolving design problems that may include performing field investigations or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations or coordination of specific design aspects into a project.
- Attend meetings with clients and contractors to ensure satisfactory project completion.
- Review plans and prepare or review technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates.
- Maintain knowledge of the latest technical developments in the general structural, waterfront, heavy industrial and building technology.

- Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering or related field required.
- Master's degree in structural engineering preferred.
- Minimum of five (5+) years of experience, preferably working in marine infrastructure (ports, harbors, etc.).
- E.I.T. registration preferred.
- Professional registration preferred.
- Working knowledge of computer applications and engineering design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, STAAD, or Revit as well as Microsoft Office.
- Working knowledge of ASCE, AISC, ACI, AWS, and other relevant marine, port, and coastal construction and structural design codes, standards, regulations, and compliance practices.
- Working knowledge of construction plans.
- Successful completion of a background check, safety training, non-DOT pre-employment and random post-employment drug screening.
- Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully complete a motor vehicle records check ("MVR") OR a reliable form of transportation to/from office and/or project site(s) preferred.
- Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
- Mobility around an office environment.
- Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
- Frequent local travel to and/or work in an outdoor environment which may include being on watercraft, adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
- Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
- Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
- Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.
- Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
