About the Job
As a Structural Engineering Assistant Project Manager for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC), you will oversee and lead design teams preparing structural calculations, drawings, and specifications on public works, large infrastructure, and design-build projects throughout the Southwest. At CEC, you will play a crucial role in the development of various structural components including, but not limited to, foundations, retaining walls, pipe junctions, utility protection, flood control structures, and above-ground steel/concrete structures. In this role, you will be expected to manage projects, review work products, perform quality control, interface with clients, budget, and mentor staff. Your expertise in structural engineering and commitment to innovative design solutions will contribute to the successful completion of critical infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the structural design efforts for projects, including the preparation of detailed calculations, drawings, and specifications for construction packages;
- Collaborate closely with the project managers, engineers, and contractors to develop efficient and constructible structural solutions that align with project goals and timelines;
- Conduct structural analyses and simulations using appropriate software to validate the integrity and performance of designed structures under various load conditions;
- Review and approve shop drawings and construction documents to ensure accurate translation of design intent during the construction phase;
- Provide technical support and guidance to the construction team during the execution of structural work, responding to inquiries and resolving on-site design-related challenges;
- Collaborate with project management to monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables related to structural design aspects
- Assist with the identification and recruitment of key personnel and mentoring/training the structural staff to assure professional growth and development;
- Assist with business development and preparation of proposals for public works pursuits;
- Assure project deliverables meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements;
- Maintain involvement in professional organizations to stay informed of new industry trends and developments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural, or related field;
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in structural design on civil engineering projects, preferably large public works or similar infrastructure projects;
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Civil and/or Structural engineering; a plus
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of industry codes and standards such as ACI, AISC, ASCE, etc.;
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of structural design software;
- Ability to work with a multi-disciplined staff of project managers, engineers, and field inspectors;
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry best practices and familiarity with relevant codes and regulations governing construction projects;
- Effective communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative and practical design solutions;
- Ability to work safely, collaboratively, and proactively in a team environment. Design-build team experience is a plus;
- Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate changes in project scope and evolving design requirements;
- Ability to perform field/site visits (estimated travel time is 5%);
- Ability to develop and mentor staff;
- Ability to prepare proposals and manage project execution;
- Ability to interface with clients, network, and develop business.
