POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Substance Abuse Counselor
DEPARTMENT: Clinical
REPORTS TO: Director of Programming
FLSA STATUS: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY
Assists the Director of Programming in all phases of operation and
implementation of policies regarding the program and is responsible for
management of the program in the Supervisors absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Upon admission, engage client in the treatment process through establishing rapport and
defining appropriate treatment goals for the client’s service plan.
• Provide therapeutic counseling for clients through the facilitation of individual and group
therapy, as scheduled.
• Complete documentation requirements and maintain quality, up to date clinical records,
including data entered into the client’s electronic medical records data base.
• Provide documentation required for billing five (5) days before due date to allow time for
corrections.
• Responsible for the prompt revision of service plans with the clinical supervisor and client.
• Facilitate referrals to appropriate community resources when needed.
• Provide information to referral sources and other authorized representatives as appropriate and within confidentiality guidelines.
• Remain compliant with internal and external policies, procedures and Quality Assurance Plan, Federal and State Licensure and contract monitoring requirements.
• Meet with clients once a week to review medication administration and document any
discrepancies or inconsistencies in KIPU.
• Participate in ongoing supervision and seek supervision when needed
• Provide assistance to the Clinical Program Leaders with ensuring excellent program delivery, as requested
• Participate in all assigned meetings, staff development and trainings as required, including Monthly Forum
• Adhere to the Resident’s Rights Policy
• Maintain professional and ethical boundaries.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School diploma or equivalent with a minimum of four (4) years related experience.
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree in the Human Services field with a minimum of two (2) years related experience preferred. Willing to begin the substance abuse certification process within 90 days of employment and obtain certification within three (3) years of employment.
• Knowledge of resources available in the community to support recovery.
• Strong interpersonal and engagement skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of the dynamics of the disease of chemical dependency and its treatment.
• Knowledge of counseling theories and practice that are best practices in Substance Use
Disorder clients
• Knowledge of recovery support systems and a commitment to the recovery principles and
programs of 12-Step programs
• Ability to perform duties physically and mentally without harm to self or others.
• Ability and willingness to provide coverage in the facility twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
• Must have knowledge of confidentiality laws so that client confidentiality is maintained at all times.
• Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
• Ability to frequently lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
• Must have a valid NC driver's license and be insurable by Hope Haven’s carrier.
