Position: Substitute Sign Language Interpreter

Salary: $15.10 - $23.00 per hour

NATURE OF WORK:
Substitute sign language interpreters are hired to work with students in the absence of the Sign Language Interpreter on a daily or long-term basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ability to professionally relate to and collaborate with co-workers, students, and community members
- Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to communicate orally, in writing, and utilizing American Sign Language (ASL)
- Ability to use technology effectively to complete tasks
- Ability to report to work as scheduled
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions
- Possess knowledge of manual communication programs – American Sign Language, Signed English
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the sign language interpreter including:
- Translating teacher’s instruction and questions to sign language
- Translating student’s sign language to voice in response to teacher’s questions
- Maintains effective working relationships with other employees and the public and deals with public relations problems courteously and tactfully
- Carries out written plans left by the sign language interpreter for the day’s schedule
- Becomes familiar with and follows school and division procedures for routines and emergencies
- Leaves a clear, written summary for the sign language interpreter of the day’s events and other relevant comments
- Performs duties as requested by the teacher or school administrator during planning periods
- Maintains confidentiality at all times: in classroom, school site, administrative buildings, and in the community
- Utilizes the SmartFind Express absence management system
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Fluent in American Sign Language
- Submit fingerprints and successfully pass a criminal history background check
- Complete authorization for Employee History Verification forms
- Complete the substitute training course
- Complete the Vector Training (formerly SafeSchools) videos (Directions will be given in class)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Temporary hourly assignment.
