Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. Position Summary Description:
The Bishop’s School substitute faculty is responsible for carrying out prepared lesson plans for the absent teacher and for providing meaningful instruction while managing the classroom environment. When prolonged absences are being covered, the substitute is responsible for performing all essential functions of the absent teacher. On occasion, the substitute will be asked to cover multiple teachers in a given day. This position is vital as it provides continuity to the learning environment when absences occur.
Compensation: $25/hour
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required. The substitute faculty member must meet all mandated health requirements and provide a clear criminal background check. Previous classroom experience in a non-supervised setting is preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent organizational skills;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to follow lesson plans accurately;
- Proficiency with widely used software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
- Ability to support the School’s mission and values as a school founded in the Episcopal tradition irrespective of own religious orientation;
- Flexibility with special needs associated with an academic calendar and schedule;
- Ability to remain professional and composed while handling a multitude of duties and situations simultaneously, and respond with appropriate judgment.
Essential Functions and Specific Duties:
- Arrive early enough to go over lesson plans for the day, make copies, etc.;
- Take attendance in accordance with the School procedures;
- Implement lesson plans, assign student class work and homework and maintain classroom control and discipline;
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom which includes pushing in chairs, picking up trash, re-shelving books, etc.;
- Ensure students adhere to the School rules (no phones, etc.);
- Ensure students are never left unattended in the classroom;
- Adhere to emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned;
- Adhere to procedures for referring students with disciplinary problems;
- Prepare a written summary of work completed and make absent teacher aware of special situations or problems encountered;
- Perform duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunch duty as needed;
- Respect personal privacy and maintain the confidentiality of privileged information;
