POSITION SUMMARY:
This intern position provides support to the Amtrak Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Division on environmental compliance and sustainability programs; collecting, reviewing, and organizing environmental data; assisting with reports and permit applications; conducting regulatory research; and assisting with communications content such as newsletters, website and annual report information.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Utilize spreadsheets and databases to support programs such as waste and recycling, fueling inspections, training, spill reporting, and environmental project financial documentation by entering and managing data from multiple sources, following up on data errors or omissions, and analyzing data to produce reports and identify areas for improvement.
- Track environmental review requests from multiple Amtrak departments and work with environmental personnel and project managers to ensure that reviews are completed and documented.
- Support environmental compliance at all types of Amtrak facilities by assisting environmental personnel in regulatory reporting, internal reporting, developing and documenting local procedures, and managing facility data in an environmental information system. Conduct regulatory research and summarize results.
- Assist in coordinating and developing written communications, such as newsletters and training materials, in support of environment and sustainability goals. Prepare materials for internal and external websites and other media. Assist in developing and delivering outreach to diverse employee groups on implementing environmental and sustainability programs.
- Various other duties in support of EHS, including but not limited to coordinating document and electronic records management, office and supplies management, using company financial systems to pay and track invoices, supporting environmental personnel throughout the country with data management systems, meeting participation and organization and other administrative functions.
- Periodic facility visits to support job functions may also be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
- Must actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, or related field.
- Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025.
