Distinguishing Characteristics of the Class
A Custodian Supervisor supervises and performs custodial duties for one or more public buildings. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, assigning and supervising the work and training of Custodians engaged in cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. Responsibilities may include coordination of activities on a multiple shift operation in a group of public buildings. Specific oral and written instructions accompany major assignments but the employee makes routine decisions and is responsible for planning work schedules and methods. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed on the basis of results obtained.
Illustrative Examples of Work- Supervises custodial staff and facility operation;
- Directs other employees and oversees all work activities for the purpose of insuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner;
- Evaluates and implements projects for the purpose of carrying out goals and objectives within area of responsibility;
- Supervises custodial functions (e.g. planning, scheduling, training, discipline, evaluation) for the purpose of insuring the Department functions in a safe and efficient manner;
- Reviews prospective custodial candidates (e.g. screening, interviewing, etc.) for the purpose of hiring new custodial staff;
- Plans cleaning schedules and sequences custodial work operations to assure an even flow and distribution of work, expeditious opening of buildings for meetings and rentals, and the meeting of schedules and deadlines;
- Reviews custodial work schedules to meet changes in workload considering such factors as peak loads, availability of custodians, and time required to perform the custodial work;
- Assigns work to subordinate custodians, explains work requirements, instructs them in proper custodial methods, reviews completed work and evaluates it for quality and quantity;
- Sets standards of adequacy for completion of prescribed custodial tasks;
- Coordinates custodial operations with custodial representatives in other buildings, concerning matters of work remaining to be done, work priorities and custodial procedures;
- Reassigns crews and custodial personnel, as necessary, in order to accomplish custodial work in the most effective manner;
- Supervises the periodic checks and minor repair of lighting and plumbing equipment, replacement of fuses, burned out bulbs, fluorescent tubes and starters;
- Acts as liaison for requests for skilled repairs in emergencies or as maintenance work is required;
- Maintains the level of custodial supplies on hand to accomplish tasks (within budget guidelines), coordinates the ordering of supplies and equipment, and ensures that custodial equipment is maintained in good working condition, keeping accurate maintenance and repair records and physical inventory records of cleaning equipment;
- Anticipates repair/maintenance needs and takes preventative measures to maintain service and safety levels;
- Performs building inspections, minor maintenance/repairs at all sites, sends routine and emergency work orders, serves as liaison to City General Services;
- Performs other related duties.
