About the Job
This position serves as a general supervisor of the central laboratory, where centralized services are provided for MyMichigan Health. Includes recommendations on hiring, performance review, counseling and disciplinary actions of assigned staff. Provides oversight of point of care tests, cumulative quality control and in-house specimen processing, which includes the preparation for shipment to reference laboratories. Supports and serves as Liaison for Senior Technologists. Monitors and assesses section performance to ensure established targets are achieved through process-improvement initiatives. This position is responsible for being knowledgeable in all aspects of the department and is competent to perform the tasks required by members of the team. This position serves as a technical resource person and facilitates the guidance, on-going education and training of staff.
Responsibilities:(20%)* Coaches, counsels, trains and develops assigned staff. Conducts team meetings, ensures effective utilization of laboratory computer system and ensures safe laboratory practices. Organizes and promotes daily huddles among assigned staff.
(40%)* Develops and communicates daily quality metrics and unit performance. Reviews cumulative quality control statistics and performance on CAP proficiency surveys. Collaborates with laboratory managers and staff to develop or modify procedures. Engages in problem solving and collaborates with laboratory team on improvement efforts. Evaluates processes to optimize workflow. Bridges communication between the processing and testing areas.
(20%)* Responsible for HR issues including coaching, counseling of employees, adherence to policies and procedures, education of staff on customer service skills to maintain consistency and high level of motivation. Responsible for completing JPRs on the team within areas of responsibility. Responsible for knowledge in regard to schedules and approving time. Responsible for participating in applicant screening and new employee hiring. Supervises, coordinates and participates in work activities for entire department.
(20%)* Responsible for communications in the lab by keeping staff informed of changes and ensuring all areas of responsibility are functioning with same guidelines and processes. Coordinate policies and any changes with other departments. Attend monthly laboratory leadership meetings to communicate actions and needs to the team. Manage effective communication with staff members having area responsibilities.
Certifications and Licensures:- MEDTECHNO: Medical Technologist
- Equivalent Experience: Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification required, preferably ASCP.
- Education: Bachelor Degree
- Equivalent Experience: A Bachelor's degree from a four year Medical Technology Program is required.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for participating in applicant screening and new employee hiring. Responsible for HR issues including coaching, counseling of employees.
Responsible for completing JPRs on the team within areas of responsibility.
Assists to establish policies and processes for the department and assures all policies, processes, procedures, and instructions are documented and communicated.
Assures that all personnel understand documents, instructions, and their duties and responsibilities. Provides personnel with the appropriate authority and resources to carry out duties.
Develops goals and objectives for personnel to assure continued growth, improvement and motivation.
Supervises, coordinates and participates in work activities for assigned staff.
Responsible for knowledge of Kronos in regards to schedules and approving time.
Attend monthly laboratory leadership meetings to communicate actions and needs to the team.
Coordinate daily huddles with specific communication goals and structure.
Manage effective communication with staff members having area responsibilities.
Assists to prepare for inspections and meet with regulatory requirements.
Reviews quality control statistics and proficiency survey performance.
Ensures action plans will achieve goals.
For High complexity tests, this position may serve as a General supervisor (CLIA definition) and for moderately complexity testing may serve as a Technical Consultant (TC) defined in laboratory policy, to ensure:
Remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications; Patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system functions properly;
Orientation is provided to all testing personnel; and annual personnel performance evaluations and documentation of testing personnel performance competency
Equivalent Experience and Other Comments (Education):
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification required, preferably ASCP.
Two (2) to four (4) years experience in a clinical laboratory or equivalent working experience within specific area of expertise required.
Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group. Basic computer skills and knowledge.
Knowledge of basic marketing techniques and financial analysis.
Written and interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able toperform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching,grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66%of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
