Job Summary
The Operations Supervisor at the Western Railroad will be responsible for daily inbound and outbound train operations.
Job Responsibilities
- Abide by Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines
- Must be able to appropriately test and evaluate the knowledge and skills of locomotive engineers
- Supervise train movements and any employees connected with that movement
- Maintains locomotives; inspects machinery, orders parts, coordinates with contractors, supervises and participates in mechanical and electrical repairs
- Serves as train dispatcher
- Assists in interpreting new FRA regulations and in developing operating rules
- Assists in implementation of the railroad's Locomotive Engineer Certification Program by serving as Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers and conducting necessary testing and supervision required by that position
- Assists in planning daily and weekly work plans regarding the scheduling of trains and maintenance work
- Responsible for completing records associated with railroad trains and switching
- Trains new employees in the proper methods of performing the tasks of conductor and locomotive engineer
- Ensures compliance with Federal Railroad Administration, Railroad Operating and Safety Rules, and other applicable Federal, State, County, or City rules, ordinances, regulations, and standards
- Assists in preparing railroad operating budget and makes recommendations in securing outside contractors for locomotive maintenance and inspection
- Adhere to all CEMEX, OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations at all times and wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds
- Meet or exceed company safety standards
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by management
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following
- Three(3) years of experience in railroad operations and railroad track maintenance;
- Must be certified as a locomotive engineer under a Certification Program approved by the Federal Railroad Administration
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of Federal Railroad Administrations regulations
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices with the ability to plan, organize, coordinate, schedule, and execute railroad train and switching operations.
- Skill in operating and conducting a railroad locomotive and train using proper train handling methods and techniques
Working Conditions
- Continuous exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme noise, and working outdoors.
- Must wear protective equipment while at the location
Physical Requirements
- Requires walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree
- Heavy Work-Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds or force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, in order to communicate to employees/visitors as well as function safely around heavy rolling equipment
- Must be able to perform all job functions which include, but may not be limited to, pushing, turning, and/or pulling of controls
