MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES / SPECIFIC JOB COMPETENCIES
General
Due to the size and scope of Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, this position is not regularly required on the day shift Monday through Friday, thus requiring different work hours on week days vs. weekends, including holiday coverage. The position is also expected to assume various tasks that would otherwise be performed by support staff in larger facilities. Examples include but are not limited to locating and retrieving patient medical records, providing meal period relief for staff, securing medications from the after hours medication location, transporting patients, and scheduling surgeries.
Administrative/Management Functions
Responsible for planning and directing the overall management of nursing services during assigned shifts and functions as the administrative support and resource person for all hospital services.
1. Acts as a resource to and collaborates with all departments, Nursing Managers, and nursing staff in the allocation of staff, admissions, and other resources.
2. Acts as liaison between health care providers, physicians, patients, and families.
3. Handles media inquiries and works collaboratively with all public service representatives.
4. Acts as the initial incident commander in the event of a disaster until other resources become available.
Quality Management/Quality of Care
Demonstrates knowledge of quality management systems and assists the organization in achievement of its' quality management programs.
1. Demonstrates accurate knowledge of relevant laws, standards, and regulations as well as system, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures affecting decisions and interpretations.
2. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
3. Maintains confidentiality of employee and patient information consistent with established guidelines, policies, and procedures. Uses discretion when discussing patient, employee and organizational information.
4. Provides suggestions to improve overall quality and day-to-day operations.
5. Investigates any unusual occurrences or untoward incidents involving patients, employees, or visitors; makes appropriate notifications and participates in follow-up as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
All job qualifications listed indicate the minimum level necessary to perform this job proficiently.
Level of Education
Minimum: New employees to this position on or after 1/1/2022 must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or current enrollment in a BSN program with an anticipated graduation date within an established timeframe.
Preferred: Masters Degree or equivalent of education and experience
Certifications, License, Registrations
Minimum: Current California Registered Nurse license and Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association. PALS certification also preferred.
Years of Related Work Experience
Minimum: Three (3) years of Registered Nurse experience in at least two different acute care areas.
Preferred: Three (3) years of demonstrated leadership experience of increasingly greater responsibility in an acute care hospital.
