This Cardiovascular Surgical Program Supervisor RN will be operationally responsible for the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) and ensuring the smooth running of the CV surgical program.
Summary:The CV Surgical Program Supervisor is responsible for coordinating comprehensive, specialized care for patients (both inpatients and outpatients). The Supervisor will function as a central figure in the overall and daily operations of the respective program and will collaborate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of all aspects of the CVOR. The supervisor will support program development and initiatives related to CVOR. Additionally, the supervisor will have the responsibility and accountability for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes in their respective departments. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The supervisor uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
The supervisor attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence-based practice and research findings. This position maintains administrative, operational and fiscal responsibility and ensures that procedures are performed in a safe, efficient manner that is cost effective. This position will have responsibilities in MyMichigan Medical Center – Midland and other system subsidiaries.
This position reports to the Cardiovascular Service Line Director. This position serves as a resource to the OR manager and CVOR teams. Collaborating with different stakeholders and departments is a critical component of the role, including surgical intensive care unit, progressive care or other units as applicable.
Responsibilities:(40%)*Program Operational Management
· Acquires and maintains highly competent staff through hiring, training, corrective action and on-going education in collaboration with OR manager and CV Service Line Director.
· Assists in performance appraisals of CVOR staff by obtaining CV Surgeon feedback/evaluation, direct observation, OR Manager input, and peer reviews.
· Collaborates with CVOR Coordinator on staff schedules. Will assist CVOR coordinator with research of product, inventory control, and vendor relationships.
· Establishes performance goals and provides feedback, coaching, training and development of CVOR staff in collaboration with OR Manager and CV Service Line Director.
· Works collaboratively with OR manager and CV Service Line Director to implement and accomplish expected CVOR deliverables listed in separate document.
· Collaborates with office/providers to ensure pre-surgical optimization (testing/procedures) are completed and timely case scheduling occurs with minimal delays or cancellations.
(20%)Communication and Standardization
· Designs and conducts the Process Improvement and Standards of Care for the CVOR team in collaboration with OR Manager and CV Service Line director.
· Works in collaboration with staff from cardiovascular offices to develop patient care standards for cardiovascular patients and efficient procedure, referral and testing scheduling.
· Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing leadership, surgical services staff, and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient. Serves as a resource person on the unit and assists with patient care as needed.
· Serves as a liaison and communication link between physicians, leadership, and staff for appropriate level of competency (skill set). Monitors and ensures the appropriate level and mix of staff to support the delivery of quality patient care and services.
(20%)*Outcomes and Regulatory Management
· Monitors outcomes and oversees performance improvement activities associated with the disease category in collaboration with the clinical and leadership teams.
· Tracks volume, registry data, productivity and benchmarking data. Monitors budgetary expenses through collaboration with OR Manager and CV Service Line Director.
· Assures health system compliance with regulatory agencies standards to include but not limited to, The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN

· Looks for opportunities in/outside of organization for educational skills enhancement.
· Develop partnerships/relationships with other clinical areas to standardize key processes.
· Oversees and assists unit managers in the provision of disease specific education to patient care staff (SICU, PCU, OR, Invasive Imaging, physician offices, etc)
· Outreach education with referring hospitals and physicians, and other stakeholders.

· Participate in national, local, internal conferences/symposia.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develops and implements protocols for care of cardiovascular patients which are evidence based. a. Researches and reviews current literature and clinical protocols and adapts applicable protocols to current processes. b. Serves as the content expert for the program and assists other staff who help care for these patients as requested, to assure that quality care is being delivered in a consistent fashion.
2. Communicates effectively, both verbally and in written format the progress of the program and identifies areas for opportunity, growth, and improvement to the medical and administrative team on an ongoing basis. a. Establishes good communication channels with all members of the team
3. Participates in Performance Improvement/research activities designed to improve patient care, and/or organizational processes. a. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS · Minimum of three years clinical experience in a hospital, outpatient setting, or private practice in cardiology. · Knowledge of CVOR nursing as normally acquired through two years surgical experience preferred. · Experience in programmatic development/project management preferred. · Must possess strong leadership, communication and organizational skills; and be an energetic, independent worker and a self‑propelled learner. · MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft® Windows.
