Reports to the Manager, Central Sterile Processing. Coordinates the daily workflow, delegates and supervises work assignments to CSP team members on assigned shift. Serves as a key contact person for sterile supplies and instrumentation needs throughout the organization.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the Certified Surgical Instrument Technician by:
- Being responsible for the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile instruments, equipment and supplies.
- Decontaminating surgical instrumentation using correct departmental procedures.
- Identifying, inspecting and assembling instrumentation for use in a sterile procedure.
- Inspecting surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper working order.
- Sterilizing surgical instrumentation; completes quality control checks according to accreditation standards and departmental procedures.
Coordinates, assigns and supervises work to team members on assigned shift and ensures work is performed in an efficient manner by:
- Coordinating, delegating and evaluating work assignments of team members.
- Evaluating competency levels and assigning positions/duties based on needed experience, education and with team members input.
- Addressing any team member issues relating to job performance and behavior of team members on assigned shift with support from CSP Manager.
- Attending or assigning a representative to attend shift report in Major Operating Room (MOR)/Outpatient Surgery Center (OSC) and provides information during the CSP shift report. Completes appropriate hand-off of information as it relates to the operational plan of the day.
Coordinates and maintains CSP operations as wells as the sterile preparation of equipment and instrumentation by:
- Monitoring and tracking instrumentation or supplies in/out of the case cart/instrument room for customer use.
- Following the procedures and standards of quality of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, storage and distribution of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Assisting in the maintenance of adequate levels of instrumentation and replacement of instrumentation as necessary by communicating needs to the CSP Manager.
- Assisting in maintaining an effective cost and inventory control system; prepares requisitions for additional supplies or equipment and forwards the PO's to the CSP Manager.
- Ensuring the inventory items retrieved or returned are correct and documented according to the established unit of measure.
- Responding to any damaged, dull or broken instrument, devise or equipment by taking it out of service and sending it for repair or replacement. Forwards repair reports to the CSP Manager.
- Utilizing knowledge to operate and maintain specialized technical equipment and machines.
Supports the CSP Management Team by:
- Serving as a resource person and preceptor during orientation for new or current sterile processing team members by explaining and demonstrating different phases of processing; preparation/packing, sterilization procedures, inventory and distribution.
- Identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiencies i.e., the flow of work through Central Sterile Processing.
- Take part in preparing and conducting performance appraisals for assigned staff with CSP Manager.
- Participating in department quality control and quality improvement plans.
- Serving as role model for team members and promoting good customer service skills.
- Maintain open communication with CSP Management Team, OR Staff, Surgeons, Physicians, and other nursing staff; also establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with ancillary/support departments.
- Interpreting, enforcing and supporting Hospital policies, procedures, protocols and the terms and conditions of the union bargaining agreement.
- Assists in the recruiting, hiring and development of team members.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of the Certified Central Service Technician program from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHSCMM) or other accredited Central Service or Surgical Technologist program is preferred. Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is required within six months of hire and must be maintained. At least two years Sterile Processing or Surgical Service experience is required with demonstrated leadership ability.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires a thorough knowledge of the functions of decontamination, preparation and assembly, sterilization and distribution of sterile equipment and instruments.
- Requires basic knowledge of the Hospital's inventory related computer system and capabilities.
- Requires basic knowledge of surgical procedures, needs and steps in use of instrumentation, materials, and supplies and fundamentals of anatomy and physiology.
- Requires a working knowledge of the surgical case cart system.
- Demonstrates sufficient leadership and organizational skills to elicit cooperation and support form department team members to plan, organize and guide their daily work activities.
- Demonstrates the strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) skills necessary to build and maintain effective working relationships and to provide effective safety and training support to staff and interact effectively with all levels of staff. Also requires the ability to disseminate information in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently while accomplishing job duty responsibilities, setting priorities and accomplishing departmental/organizational goals and objectives.
- Requires the ability to operate standard office equipment (calculator, photocopier, fax machine, etc.) specific to department needs.
- Requires the organization, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills which are necessary to plan and estimate project activities and time lines. Also to identify and resolve problems and deliver viable solutions. Also requires the skills necessary to evaluate reports, generate and evaluate inventory related data and set inventory supply levels.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a sterile processing environment requiring physical exertion, time constraints and some undesirable objects to handle.
- Work is performed using personal protective equipment according to OSHA requirements to prevent exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
Physical Demands
- Requires fine motor skills and vision for manipulation of highly technical equipment used to meet patient care needs and the visual and manual dexterity to perform job duties.
- Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. standing/walking for prolonged periods of time, lift up to 50 lbs. and to push/pull equipment and case carts of up to 500 lbs.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
