Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is looking for a Surgery Clinic Technician to join our talented, fun and supportive team. This position is primarily a client facing role – as the Surgery Clinic Technician will be the first, and often the last person to work with clients bringing pets in to the surgery service. The ideal candidate will have experience in either a general practice or specialty hospital, and a strong interest in providing an exceptional experience for every client of the surgery service. This position will require excellent communication skills and a comfort level with computerized medical record systems. A knowledge of basic surgical procedures is useful, but not required.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare the exam room at start of the day and maintain cleanliness throughout the day
- Ensuring all referring records are on site prior to appointments
- Review the day with the surgery team before the start of the day and discuss any key points, questions, or concerns, etc.
- Take thorough history from client and enter into Instinct
- Take patient vitals and enter into Instinct
- Assist with appointment recalls – prep clients for visit
- Facilitate diagnostic work-up and communicate with clients throughout work-up time
- Assist Doctors with basic procedures such as FNA, bandage changes, suture removals
- Prepare client for scheduled surgeries – including pre-medications to take home, instructions for day of surgery
- Discharge of patients after surgery, including instructing clients on after-care, medications, and follow-up plans
- Communicate with clients and coordinate post-operative care, plans, and schedule recheck appointments
- Create invoices and enter charges for surgery appointments
- Venipuncture and submission of lab samples
- Understands classification of commonly-used medications and associated side effects
- Fill prescriptions in hospital and call prescription orders into outside pharmacies or clinics
- Understanding of Outlook, OneNote, Excel, and Word
- Maintains proper phone etiquette
- Multitasks and prioritizes tasks
- Communicates well and coordinates with Surgery Department staff members to accomplish daily goals
Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years’ professional experience in small animal clinical setting as a technician/assistant
- Excellent communication skills with clients and team members
- Proficient time management, ability to problem solve, learn, and handle multiple tasks
- Enthusiastic team player with a patient, and positive professional attitude
- Must have the ability to adjust to changes in the environment and able to handle stress in a calm manner
- Must be able to anticipate patient needs and be detail oriented due to the high level of quality medicine
- Must be able to lift and restrain pets of at least 40 pounds, and work on feet most of the day
