Basic Purpose/Job Summary
To effectively and efficiently coordinate and support scheduling of surgeries, in collaboration with facility surgical departments, insurance companies, surgeons, practice business office representatives, ophthalmic technicians assistants, and patients.
Surgical Coordinator Duties
• Creates and monitors all ASC and hospital surgery postings
• Prep paperwork for facility, patient and doctors
• Acts as a first line of defense when orders come from clinic to check if orders, benefits and patient surgical history all coordinate for payable claims
• Calls to confirm procedures
• Communicates with the facility administration
• Sends pre-certification requests to the authorization team at the time of scheduling surgeries
• Coordinates and communicates with authorization team to determine if orders are correct and in compliance with patient benefits; if pre-cert is likely to be denied or still pending
• Reschedules all cancelled/no show procedures
• Meets with patient out of clinic to discuss their surgical appointment, go over pre-procedure instructions, and answer patient questions regarding their procedure
• Makes sure that the Surgical Coordination sheet and Pre-Procedure instructions are filled out entirely, signed, and dated by the patient and the witness
• Works with clinical manager and ASC administration to balance the schedule and continuously monitors the schedule for potential problems or areas for improvement
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required
• Must have prior experience in a healthcare setting, preferably working as a scheduler or front desk
• Have an understanding of insurance and pre-certification process
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required and prior experience with PM and EHR systems
• Strong customer service skills
• Good command of the English language, both verbal and written
• Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients and others
• Ability to work independently with detail and accuracy
• Ability to apply common sense, understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
• Ability to deal with problems involving several variables
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
