- JOB SUMMARY
- The Surgical Technology Extern will provide intraoperative care to selected patients by assisting the surgical team during operative procedures. This position will allow surgical technology students the opportunity to work with experienced surgical technicians in a dynamic and supportive clinical environment under the supervision of the Registered Nurse or experience certified Surgical Technician.
- DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
- Aids other members of the OR team in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care duties including transport of patients, in collaboration with the Registered Nurse and members of the health care team
- Assist in patient positioning, supply readiness and location
- Provide terminal cleaning and between case preparation and understands technical requirements of cases and required room arrangements
- Assist to facilitate a smooth and efficient transition between surgical procedures
- Maintains a clean, safe environment and adheres to aseptic principles and technique while assisting with all surgical procedures
- Participates in performance improvement initiatives.
- EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum requirement:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Surgical Technology program
- Successfully completed all clinical training as defined by the accredited Surgical Technology program OR completion of in-classroom training (first semester) of an accredited Surgical Tech program
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Team Member must maintain active enrollment in the school program to continue participation in the externship position

- Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
- Constantly exposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
- Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).
- Frequently required to walk and move about.
- Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
- Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
- Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
- Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
- Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
