Overview:Work outdoors using electromagnetic equipment and ground penetrating radar to detect subsurface utilities. Also perform vacuum truck operation; perform utility mark out and surveying activities; and document work with sketches, photos, spreadsheets and/or written reports.
Responsibilities:Leadership and Direction
- Perform work under direct supervision of an experienced professional and follow established procedures and clearly defined processes. Receive direction on all aspects of assignments, specific tasks and how to execute. Work is thoroughly reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound techniques and principles.
At the Operational and Company Level
- Locate underground utilities through nondestructive methods.
- Operate Data Collectors and collect field measurements.
- Record and document the underground utility field data accurately.
- Train to operate and maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Train to meet company safety standards.
Do the Work
- Assist in operation of vacuum truck and related equipment such as compressor blower, vacuum hose and air lance, jackhammer, pogo-tamper, concrete saw, hand tools, etc.
- Assist in identification of underground utilities with electromagnetic equipment including electromagnetic induction (EMI) and ground penetrating radar (GPR).
- Assist in the surveying of all SUE work.
- Assist in implementation of traffic control procedures.
- Drive company vehicles.
- Actively work towards obtaining skills required to advance to SUE Technician II position.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
- Strong sense of urgency in responding to constituents.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and commitment to quality.
- Self-reliance and ability to operate independently with limited direction.
- Effective working relationship with internal leaders and peers, as well as external clients.
- High school diploma or GED strongly preferred. Commensurate relevant experience considered.
- Entry level position, no prior experience required.
- Ability/willingness to travel for work assignments, including occasional overnight assignments.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and random thereafter.
- Ability to work outside in all seasons and conditions.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
- Primarily outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
- Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Frequent and prolonged use of data collection equipment and/or drones, necessitating walking the assigned study area to complete data collection over the course of several hours.
- Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
- Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 lbs.
- Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 lbs.
- Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
