SUMMARY
Under general supervision, assists MPS program staff and school staff with provision of swim lessons for K-8 MPS students.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists MPS staff to provide a safe and positive educational learning environment for students.
- Performs duties within scope of authority and training, and in compliance with MPS policies and quality standards; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Collaborates with physical education teachers to design lesson plans, schedules, and organization of class structure.
- Travels to a variety of District sites to provide swim instruction or lifeguarding duties.
- Ensures a safe environment for all water activities while keeping a positive rapport with students and colleagues; ensures adherence to rules and regulations.
- Supervises and instructs swimming classes.
- Performs appropriate rescues and survival skills to remove adult body weight from the pool.
- Assists maintenance of a clean, safe pool, pool deck, and locker space; assists with surface cleaning.
- Performs clerical duties, maintains and organizes files, keeps records and assists with reports.
- Provides customer service to parents and guardians; assists with parenting skills and developmental issues, answers questions, and explains school rules.
- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
- Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
- High School Diploma/GED; AND
- Eighteen (18) years of age; AND
- One (1) swim instruction experience; OR
- Equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Knowledge of:
- District policies and procedures.
- Methods and techniques to assist children with swim instruction.
- Principles of record keeping and records management.
- Computer software associated with duties.
- Safety rules and regulations.
Skill in:
- Maintaining composure and working effectively under classroom conditions.
- Performing swim instruction duties in an effective and efficient manner.
- Monitoring aquatic facilities and patrons for violations of rules and safety standards.
- Communicating effectively with students.
- Ensuring adherence to safety principles and practices.
- Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
- Communicating effectively in verbal and written forms.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification within ninety (90) days of date of employment.
- Swimming instructor/Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification within ninety (90) days of employment.

Work is performed in an aquatic environment and requires working with children; agility to lift participants weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally move objects weighing up to 75 pounds; stamina to move about the pool deck and office, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, and reach; stamina to walk, stand and swim for extended periods of time.
Work is subject to performance under exposure to adverse environmental conditions and exposure to chlorinated water.
