POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Aquatic Program & Training Manager, the swim instructor will communicate effectively and provide leadership in instructional areas of aquatic programs according to the YMCA aquatic policy while maintaining a safe environment. They will follow the YMCA philosophy of developing a healthy spirit, mind, and body for him or herself and for others. The swim instructor will uphold and support the mission and four core values of the YMCA.

Aquatics Program & Training Manager
PAY RANGE:
$25.00/hour - $35.00/hour
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PAY RANGE:
- Work effectively with children and adults in a learning environment based on individual needs.
- Use positive reinforcement as a reward for skills achieved as well as good behavior.
- Ensure that each student has accomplished at least one goal during each class period.
- Demonstrate and use equipment properly.
- Teach with enthusiasm and creativity.
- Instruct classes in accordance with YMCA policies, including covering all class components and using proper teaching technique.
- Maintain constant supervision on all class members and ensure their safety during the class.
- Keep children moving as much as possible to get the most out of each class.
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled time to perform assigned duties.
- Be courteous and give sincere attention to participants and parents.
- Know the names of class participants and use their names when speaking to them.
- Ensure a positive learning environment while maintaining a sufficient level of class control.
- Communicate requests for replacement and time off to supervisor.
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings and training events.
- Have equipment ready before class begins and store it properly after class.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Will obtain appropriate YMCA or ARC certification at the earliest opportunity.
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Indoor pool facility: this environment is characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity levels.
- The atmosphere can be loud and busy with multiple classes or swim sessions occurring simultaneously.
- Candidates will interact with a diverse group of participants, including children, adults and individuals with special needs, requiring a friendly, patient and professional demeanor.
- The role requires an adherence to safety and hygiene protocols, as well as the ability to maintain a clean and organized pool area.
- The swim instructor position requires a high level of fitness and endurance. Swim Instructors are required to spend extended periods of time in the water, demonstrating skill technique and assisting participants.
- The role involves frequent bending, reaching, lifting and moving of equipment as much as 10lbs, as well as the ability to support swimmers of various sizes.
- Strong verbal communication skills are essential to effectively instruct and ensure the safety of all participants.
