Job Summary
The Data Scientist Lead oversees the management of data systems, supervises a team of data professionals, and ensures data integrity and security across multiple platforms. This role plays a key part in supporting program evaluations, strategic decision-making, and reporting to funders. The position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to optimize systems, drive data-driven insights, and align data management practices with organizational goals. Additionally, the Data Scientist Lead contributes to the development of data strategies that enhance program effectiveness and support future planning.
- Leads a team of data scientist professionals.
- Provides consultation on the design, testing, and enhancement of reporting systems.
- Researches, manipulates, and prepares advanced data reports related to program activities and the results of research interventions.
- Typically includes creating various machine learning-based tools or processes within the unit, such as recommendation engines or automated lead scoring systems.
- Performs statistical analysis to build Artificial Intelligence tools that automate certain processes within the unit and implement data science algorithms (e.g. regression, classification and clustering techniques, decision trees and random forests, machine learning techniques like supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning).
- Mentors and trains junior and professional staff members.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Database Management, Reporting and Evaluation:
- Oversee the integrity and security of various databases, ensuring data is accurate and up to date.
- Manage complex data systems across multiple platforms (UAB, HSF, programmatic, and billing systems).
- Collaborate with external database contractors on database development, improvements, and optimization.
- Lead data extraction and analysis to support program evaluations, performance metrics, strategic decision-making, and internal reporting for the Substance Abuse Division and Department of Psychiatry.
- Ensure timely preparation and submission of reports to state, federal, and local funding sponsors, ensuring compliance with regulations and requirements.
- Collaborate with program staff, grants management teams, and leadership within the Substance Abuse Division and Department of Psychiatry to ensure data collection and reporting align with organizational goals and expectations.
Systems Coordination, Reporting, and Quality Assurance:
- Serve as the main point of contact between internal teams and external database contractors, overseeing system improvements, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations while implementing quality control measures for data accuracy, consistency, and security.
- Oversee the development of all reports to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Implement quality assurance processes to review and validate reports, ensuring they meet the necessary criteria and are submitted on time to funding sponsors and regulatory agencies.
- Supervise the report submission process and maintain communication with stakeholders, ensuring that all reports are aligned with organizational objectives and comply with timelines and guidelines.
- Support executive management in developing data strategies and identifying opportunities for data-driven program enhancements.
- Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to inform decision-making and program planning.

Education
- Doctorate degree in a related field
- And four (4) years of related experience
- OR Master's degree in a related field
- And six (6) years of related experience required.
