JOB SUMMARY:
The Tax Associate – Indirect Tax will report to the Tax Manager – Planning & Compliance. This role will be responsible for the proactive management of National Gypsum’s sales and use tax, GST/HST tax and property tax compliance obligations. This role will act as a tax department liaison and advocate on indirect tax issues impacting the company.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (not all inclusive):
- Coordinate the sales and use tax compliance process through the compilation of data for a third-party vendor to prepare sales and use tax returns
- Coordinate the property tax compliance process through the compilation of data for a third-party vendor to prepare property tax returns
- Prepare the GST/HST returns for the company’s Canadian subsidiaries
- Prepare annual renewals of the company’s business licenses
- Maintain indirect tax filings via a monthly electronic calendar
- Participate in the monthly accounting close process via the preparation of journal entries to accurately account for indirect tax liabilities.
- Perform indirect tax general ledger account reconciliations
- Perform research and consult on various tax matters utilizing tax related software
- Keep abreast of changing indirect tax laws and incorporate changes into the indirect tax compliance process
- Handle inquiries from various taxing authorities as well as from internal and external customers
- Coordinate and timely resolve indirect tax state audits initiated by taxing authorities
- Work with third party consultants who perform reverse sales and use tax audits in an attempt to identify refunds and overpayments of tax
- Work with third party consultants to proactively negotiate and appeal property tax assessments and audits with taxing authorities to achieve the best possible outcome for the company
- Understand major accounting processes and systems that affect sales and use tax processing.
- Understand and advise on the tax benefits or consequences of capital projects
- Understand and use accounting systems to research and make appropriate adjustments
- Manage the sales and use tax exemption certificate process to ensure the necessary documentation is properly secured and maintained
- Educate and train associates responsible for sales and use tax application within business processes. Maintain and update sales and use tax information presented on the company’s intranet site
- Special projects and other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- 3 years of hands-on corporate indirect tax experience
- Proficiency with enterprise level tax software
- Strong research skills including proficiency in tax research software
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products, including Word and Excel
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Extensive organizational skills including the ability to effectively prioritize tasks
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Domestic travel up to 10%
- Hybrid work eligible
