Job Description:
Our client, a leading law firm, is seeking a Tax Controversy Counsel to join their prestigious Litigation Department, with opportunities available in multiple office locations, including Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY; and Washington, DC. This role is ideal for a seasoned attorney who has a robust background in tax controversy and litigation. The successful candidate will possess eight to ten years of relevant experience and will be responsible for advising clients on complex tax disputes, representing them in audits, appeals, and litigation before federal and state courts, as well as administrative agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert legal counsel on a wide range of tax controversy matters, including federal, state, and local tax disputes.
- Represent clients in all phases of tax disputes, from initial audit through litigation, including managing appeals and settlement negotiations.
- Conduct thorough legal research and prepare persuasive legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, and memos.
- Lead and manage multiple cases simultaneously, ensuring timely and effective resolution of client matters.
- Collaborate closely with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff within the firm to provide comprehensive legal services.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships, offering strategic advice and ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.
- Stay current on developments in tax law and controversy practices, continuously enhancing your knowledge and expertise.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school, with a strong academic background.
- LLM in Taxation is required.
- Must be licensed to practice law in the state where the office is located (Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY; or Washington, DC).
- A minimum of eight to ten years of experience in tax controversy, with a focus on audits, appeals, and tax litigation.
- Proven track record of managing multiple, complex tax matters simultaneously.
- Strong legal research and writing skills, with a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality, persuasive legal documents.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal issues to clients and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing cases with minimal supervision.
- Exceptional client service skills, with a commitment to providing proactive, responsive, and tailored legal advice.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state tax laws, regulations, and procedures.
- Experience in representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state tax authorities.
- Familiarity with alternative dispute resolution methods, including mediation and arbitration, as they relate to tax disputes.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess and manage risk in complex tax matters.
- Ability to handle high-pressure situations and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, ensuring all deadlines and client expectations are met.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- This position operates within a professional office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, printers, and copiers.
- The position requires the ability to work in a seated position for extended periods and may involve occasional travel to client sites or court appearances.
Compensation & Benefits:
- The salary range for this position is competitive and applies specifically to the New York and Washington, DC offices. Compensation is determined by considering a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, licenses, certifications, geographic location, market demands, and other business and organizational needs.
- A reasonable estimate of the current salary range for this position is $275,000 - $325,000 in New York and Washington, DC.
