About the Job
This position is responsible for performing a wide range of duties associated with the sales and use tax (SUT) compliance function. The primary duty of this role is to ensure that client's sales and use tax returns are filed and paid in an accurate and timely manner and that client satisfaction is high.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coaches, develops, trains and mentors tax returns processing staff to achieve personal and business goals.
- Maintains overall ownership of notice management, exception processing and partner relationships.
- Provides continuous identification of onboarding, returns process and system improvements to reduce errors, improve efficiency and overall customer experience (that support the compliance process).
- Implements and manages processes and system changes.
- Works with product management, treasury and development staff to improve and prioritize manual and automated processes.
- Identifies and helps to solve system issues.
- Ensures SOC II controls related to the compliance process are continuously updated and followed.
- Acts as an escalation point for internal and external customers.
- Ensures response to, resolution, and tracking notices from taxing jurisdictions in a timely manner through written and verbal communication with state and local tax representatives.
- Ensures complete notice documentation is on the client portal to ensure transparency.
- Documents unusual out-of-scope issues both internally and externally.
- Ensures continuing development and documentation of internal processes and procedures.
- Must be available for overtime, as the nature of this service typically requires overtime between the 10th and the 20th of each month.
- Exercises professional judgment to resolve issues.
- Works with Customer Support and Implementation leadership to resolve customer issues.
- Participates in projects and performs other duties as assigned.
- Occasional business travel may be required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Specific knowledge of multi-state tax preparation software and preparation of monthly SUT returns.
- Understand various business entities (i.e. retail, software, manufacturing, leasing, etc.) and the related SUT compliance details involved.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be detailed oriented, a team player, and have strong organizational skills.
- Must be able to work under tight monthly deadlines.
- Strong diplomacy skills are required.
- Ability to work without supervision, latitude for independent decision making.
- Must manage time and priorities effectively by completing tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to develop and apply professional concepts to resolve issues with moderate scope.
- Ability to build productive internal/external working relationships.
- Ability to listen and understand information and communicate the same.
- Must be results oriented, customer focused, and exhibit strong interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages, strong Excel skills.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor's Degree in accounting or similar field required.
- Ten (10) plus years of experience in Sales and Use Tax returns.
- Public accounting or big four experience preferred.
- Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
