Purpose of Your Position
Provide instructional and non-instructional services to students in assigned group of infants/ toddlers, preschoolers and/or school age children under the general supervision of a certified special education teacher.

| Position Functions and Responsibilities |
1. | Understands and promotes Elizabeth Seton Children’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure application with organizational policies and procedures. |
2. | Assist the special education teacher in implementing IEP and IFSP goals for each student in assigned classroom as detailed in the weekly lesson plan |
3. | Act in the capacity of a substitute teacher, in the absence of a classroom teacher, as per New York State Education Department regulations |
4. | Collaborate with classroom team in designing lesson plan activities based on knowledge of children with special needs and child development |
5. | Work with individual and/or small groups of students on learning goals during classroom activities as directed by the teacher and /or relates service therapists |
6. | Assist students in physical care tasks and health related activities including therapeutic feeding, toileting and positioning in adapted equipment |
7. | Assist teacher in maintaining accurate classroom documentation (student attendance and health checks, observational record keeping for IEP/IFSP goal tracking, classroom housekeeping task, etc.) |
8. | Transport students to and from school; making sure they are seated securely and have all necessary adapted equipment in working order |
9. | Work collaboratively with classroom team to maintain an organized and safe learning environment (aware of classroom activities and location of children at all times; anticipate and respond to individual needs of all children; ensure all equipment in working order; sanitizing toys and other equipment according to policy) |
10. | Carry out standards for customer service; quality improvement; professional development; environmental, safety and infection control practices; confidentiality, corporate compliance and all other John A. Coleman policies and procedures; attend all mandatory in-services to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices in working with students and their families |
11. | Collaborate with colleagues and leadership team in creating and implementing a school wide Professional Development Plan |
12. | Perform other tasks to support the operations of the school as assigned by School Administration |
Education Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Valid New York State Assistant Teacher Certification Required
- Experience with children with special needs
Employee Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently
- Must meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and all other regulatory agencies
- Must meet the general health requirements set fourth by the policies of this School which includes a medical and physical examination
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
- Perform tasks that may involve exposure to the children’s blood/body fluids
- Must be able to assist in the evacuation of children, if necessary
Working Conditions:
- Will work in a well-lighted and ventilated area
- Will be subject to frequent interruptions
- May be asked to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary
Hourly Rate:
$26.42/Hr.
