The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB) in the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science (SES) at Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor in Chemical Biology in the area of genomics with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). We are seeking a passionate educator dedicated to delivering high-quality instruction, curriculum development, and experiential learning experience. The successful candidate will focus on enhancing our Chemical Biology programs and equipping students with the skills needed to succeed in AI/ML applications within the genomics field and at the interface between drug discovery and clinical research through collaboration.
Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Curriculum Development:
- Deliver engaging and effective undergraduate and graduate courses in bioinformatics, biostatistics, and population genomics, particularly emphasizing AI/ML techniques and tools.
- Develop and update course materials to reflect current industrial trends in genomics and AI/ML, ensuring courses are skill-based and accessible to students.
- Employ innovative teaching methodologies, including online and hybrid learning models, to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
- Student Research Mentorship & Advising:
- Provide research and career advising to students as a faculty advisor, guiding them on coursework, research projects, and career opportunities in genomics and AI/ML.
- Supervise undergraduate and master's level research projects, both individual and group, especially senior capstone research projects and master’s special problems courses. Support students’ development of practical skills in genomics.
- Develop a thematic and sustainable research portfolio that would facilitate the research experience of undergraduate and Master students and that would be supported by foundations, industry, and government.
- Service & Community Engagement:
- Contribute to departmental activities, such as student recruitment, skill-based curriculum planning, and program assessment.
- Participate, as a thought leader, in university and community outreach to promote genomics and AI/ML, engaging with industry partners and other stakeholders.
- Serve on departmental or university committees as needed, contributing to the governance and strategic direction of the institution.
Required Education and Experience:
- Education:
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. degree preferred, M.S. level considered) in Genomics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field, with a strong research background in AI/ML.
- Experience & Skills:
- Demonstrated teaching experience at the university level, with a commitment to high-quality, student-centered and skilled-based instruction.
- Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB) and familiarity with AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment.
- Industrial and leadership experience in the biopharma and biomedical research sectors, with insights into the practical applications of genomics and AI/ML in the industry.
- Desirable:
- Interest in conducting research with students, helping them gain hands-on experience and contributing to practical applications in genomics and AI/ML.
- Experience in leveraging modern computational methods such as multi-omic analysis, AlphaFold, and other advanced bioinformatics tools.
- Interest in writing educational research grants to enhance genomics education and secure funding for program initiatives.
- Experience in curriculum development and a proven track record of using innovative teaching techniques.
- Engagement with professional organizations or initiatives related to bioinformatics, AI/ML, or data science education.
- Interest in developing interdisciplinary collaborations within the university and with external partners.
