The Department of Biology at Utah Valley University invites applications for a Teaching Laboratory Manager for Physiology. This is a 12-month staff position with 3 credit hours of teaching responsibilities each semester (fall, spring, summer).
The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education and effective teaching utilizing inclusive, data-driven pedagogies. Responsibilities for this position include making solutions, preparing labs each week, organizing and maintaining facilities, equipment, and supplies for physiology laboratory courses, designing and maintaining up-to-date curriculum, ordering, and procuring supplies and materials while managing the lab fee budget, and hiring, supervising, and training laboratory instructors and student assistants. Additionally, the candidate will be asked to teach a course (lab or lecture for a total of 3 contact or credit hours) each semester within their area of expertise.UVU is committed to preparing all students for success in an increasingly complex, diverse, and globalized society. Summary of Responsibilities
• Teaches lab courses according to department and college guidelines, three contact hours during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Administers and grades quizzes in the laboratory/field exercises. Grades laboratory/field notebooks. Conducts office hours for student questions. Determines and submits student grades for the labs taught.
• Prepares & supervises student lab assistants in the preparation of equipment, materials, & chemical reagents of proper concentration for each laboratory class to which the lab manager is assigned. Works with Physiology Faculty and other lab managers, faculty, and staff in a collegial & professional manner. Maintains or assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment & supplies (consumable and non-consumable) used in each of the courses to which the lab manager has been assigned. Determines inventory needs and makes orders and purchases, in sufficient quantity and in proper purity grade for the courses the lab manager has been assigned. Oversees, manages, and administers applicable budget and budgeting priorities, as needed. Determines, coordinates, and supervises appropriate methods and techniques in the dispensing of bacterial cultures and media, and chemical reagents, in the storage of compatible and non-compatible chemicals and materials, and in the disposal of chemical waste. Provides routine and preventative maintenance for laboratory equipment. Diagnoses and repairs equipment and instrument problems or arranges for repairs where necessary. Works with faculty lab coordinator(s) to improve current laboratory experiences and to develop new laboratory experiments. Manages preparation rooms, storage areas, and other designated areas, as designated by the department chair. Provides input for laboratory course schedules. Other duties, as assigned by the department chair.
• Manages, supervises, and ensures that all safety standards, procedures, and recommendations pertaining to laboratory experiments, materials, and procedures are adhered to by instructors, student lab assistants, and students. Provides orientation and training on laboratory experiments, materials, and procedures to lab instructors, student lab assistants, and students.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with an appropriate degree in a related field to the coursework being taught; or, a related combination of education and experience totaling six years. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. or higher degree in Biology, Zoology, or a related field. a B.S. with relevant experience may be considered. Teaching experience preferred.

• Knowledge of safety standards for the use of laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies.
