About the Job
The Athletic Medicine Team Physician, provides services as a UHS physician with special attention to the musculoskeletal care of the student population. This physician serves as team physician for varsity athletes at the discretion of the Director of Athletic Medicine (DAM). This may include sideline event coverage, directing the care of student athletes receiving care from a highly skilled staff of Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, a clinical registered nurse and a sports dietitian, and serving as a partner to the DAM. The physician participates as a member of the UHS physician group, including clinical sessions at the McCosh Health Center. Evening and weekend event coverage may be required. This position is temporary.
Responsibilities:Clinical Care - 90%:
- Provides services as a UHS physician including acute care, appointments, inpatient care, day call and on-call coverage.
- Evaluation and management of problems presented by patients in a primary care setting.
- Assessment of laboratory reports and x-rays.
- Performance of minor surgical procedures (such as suturing, incision & drainage)
- Making judicious referrals to appropriate specialists
- Evening appointment hours (training room coverage and/or evening clinic hours) may be included.
- Administrative duties as assigned.
- Provides athletic medicine and education services to non-varsity athletes, including club sports, recreational athletes, and graduate students as well as others with sports medicine needs.
- May provide care to student athletes as well as provide emergency services as a sideline physician for high-risk sports. Sideline care often requires high complexity clinical decision making in emergency situations. The care of student athletes includes performing pre-participation physical examinations, injury and illness evaluations, referrals to consultants and obtaining additional diagnostic tests.
- Determines eligibility as well as return to play status. This is an essential component of this position and requires independent judgment as well as integrating multiple outside opinions and factors for the variety of medical conditions. It occasionally includes collaboration with administrative services and legal counsel for Princeton University.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Administrative Management - 5%:
- Maintains professional standards in the management of confidential information and will treat interactions with patients as privileged communications.
- Is in compliance with regulatory requirements, such as reporting reportable diseases.
Training & Professional Development - 5%:
- Maintains current certification in CPR and AED with annual training sessions.
- Maintains current licensure in NJ, and current CDS and DEA registrations and will comply with NJBME and other regulatory standards. In addition, a physician will practice in a manner consistent with the standards of her/his professional specialty board.
- Participates regularly in professional continuing education activities and will meet NJ State CE requirements for licensure, as well as CE requirements as required by their specialty certification Board. It is expected that UHS physicians will continuously update their knowledge and skills in order to provide an optimal level of care.
- Completes standard in-house training annually in blood-borne pathogens and certain occupational risk areas, as determined by Occupational Health and the Director of Medical Services and will comply with adverse event/occurrence reporting policy.
- Provides consultative guidance when requested by another UHS professional. The UHS model fosters a collaborative relationship between physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
Other Considerations:
- If a physician chooses to become involved in research activities or publications, this activity must be consistent with University policies.
- Malpractice insurance is provided by the University for any Professional Activity done within the UHS scope of practice. The University malpractice does not extend to activities that are not within this scope, such as private practice.
- The University has designated spokespersons. Any communications with the media, the public, or the general student body must be consistent with University policy.
- UHS leadership reserves the option (after proper notification) to institute evening hour appointments with coverage by a staff physician.
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications:
- New Jersey license as a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy
- Primary specialty in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Pediatrics
- 3+ years of experience
- Experience as a Team Physician at the college/university level.
- Primary care board certification, sports medicine sub-specialty certification (CAQ)
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automate External Defibrillator (AED) certifications.
- Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.
- Respects the cultures and identities of others.

Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 years or more of relevant experience as a physician practicing Athletic Medicine.
- Proficiency in musculoskeletal ultrasound
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.
- Familiarity with total work systems (such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and Baldrige National Quality Program); and reviewing and analyzing data.
- Training in health equity and other diversity and inclusion topics.
