Support the Telecommunications Technician team by maintaining and repairing all aspects of the Peoples Natural Gas communication network, including voice, data, and transport network.
Essential Duties:
- Monitor and troubleshoot servers, network and phone systems, and application issues; identify breakdowns within the telephony systems and support the restoration and repair of normal operations, using a variety of testing methods and equipment.
- Monitor and troubleshoot critical processes and assist senior level technicians in emergency situations and longer than normal work hours, including on call duties.
- Assist senior technicians with site surveys and collaborate with department contacts to plan and coordinate new and/or upgraded cabling, and telecommunications equipment for small or basic systems.
- Support the installation of new equipment and upgrades and coordinate installation activities; support the installation and repair of distribution racks, interconnecting and distribution cables, terminals, intrusion alarms, alerting devices, grounding, and wiring of a variety of signaling and communications systems
- Assist with the implementation of software changes in network equipment
- Recommend precision adjustments on electrical control devices for maximum operating efficiency.
- Install, test, maintain and repair key telephony systems directed by voice network senior resources.
- Contact vendors for replacement components
- Maintain current telephony/infrastructure line termination records and prepare written work reports
- Collaborate with field technicians to ensure projects are completed to quality and delivery specifications
- Troubleshoot various LAN/WAN equipment
- Make recommendations using standard operating procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned or required
- Two – three years telecommunication experience
- Vocational electronics or telecommunication training or associate’s degree
- FCC license preferred
- Demonstrated related experience may be substituted for preferred education
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive PNG company vehicles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of voice, data, transport networks and power systems
- Technical skills to install and maintain diverse telecommunication systems
- Knowledge of microwave, fiber, PBX and data networks
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
- Ability to collaborate as a member of a team and with other departments
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
Working Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to: travel approximately 75% to work sites of PNG (and travel beyond Pittsburgh representing PNG)
- Operate computer, telecommunications systems and hand tools
- Perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds if force constantly to move objects.
- See color, possess depth perception and field of vision, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, repetition and visual acuity
- Incumbent is exposed to extreme temperatures, noise, wet, ad humid conditions, gas, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, poor ventilation, mechanical, and electrical hazards.
