Top NYC Healthcare Firm is looking for an experienced healthcare professional to join it growing organization as a Medical Laboratory Assistant for an Ongoing Twelve (12) to Twenty-four (24) Month Temporary Assignment.
In this role you will log incoming specimens which arrive to the Accession Desk into the Pathology Computer Network; Assist in the Maintenance of Quality Control for Reports and All Data Entry Pertaining to Patients' Records.
Incredible organization where you feel as though you are "giving back”. Working on-site in the upper 60's on Manhattan's Upper East Side. MUST be Fully COVID and Flu Vaccinated. Full-time (37.5-hrs Weekly); Mon-Fri (7.5-hrs Daily); 9am-5pm or 10am-6pm.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Performance Expectations: Examines specimen/slide and requisition and/or outside report for complete and accurate information, comparing patient demographic data on the specimen container/slide with that which is written on the requisition and/or outside report. Examines submitted slides and compares with outside report for correctness of slide number and patient name. Compares patient demographics on the requisition with that on the specimen container/slide. This must match. If there is discrepancy do not accession. Refer to supervisor. Anatomic site/specimen source must be clearly written on the requisition. Ensure proper patient identification at all steps of the accessioning process. Specimen and requisition are examined to verify the patient identification and for completeness of information submitted. Specimen source, patient identity, collection date and submitting physician should be obtained before processing.
Performance Expectations: Ensures that the correct submitting physician is entered in the computer. Verifies that appropriate billing/account number corresponds to information written on the requisition received. Verifies that the same accession number in the computer is placed on the specimen container/slide and requisition. Enters appropriate information (i.e. part type, specimen, clinical history/diagnosis, outside accession number, number of slides submitted, outside procedure date). Places label with accession number on requisition and specimen container/slide. Highlights name on accession label and specimen label to ensure accuracy. Identifies and document QA specimen/requisition deficiencies, if any. Rechecks entries for correctness of number of specimens/slide and conformity of text with received before proceeding to the next patient. Submits accessioned specimens/slides to histology technicians or fellows, for processing. Places requisitions in holding area for distribution. Labels specimens for special handling (i.e., rush, bone marrow, decal, florescence, kidney biopsy). Accessions frozen sections, provide labels with FS written on label. Notifies pathologist and technician promptly upon receipt of frozen specimens and other specimens requiring immediate examination as requested by the OR physician. Verbally communicates with the OR in a clear, precise, and efficient manner during frozen section process. Prints and attaches to the requisition daily all diagnosis and procedure codes from SMS for all biopsies accessioned. Keeps one copy of requisition.
Performance Expectations: Prints Accession log daily and files in designated binder in Accession Area. Prepares in numerical order all pathology requisitions for binding and/or storage. Ensures that all radiology films received are logged when they arrive in Pathology and when Radiology staff picks them up. Using CoPath computer system, checks the status of requisitions in "HOLD” box and files cases that are signed out. Follows up on delays of cases not already signed out. Using CoPath computer system, checks and verifies that all final reports are signed out in CoPath prior to filing in storage area.
Performance Expectations: Greets visitors by looking up, making eye contact and being observant. Answers assigned telephone lines clearly and distinctly with name of department in a timely manner. Assists visitors by asking their name and who they are visiting; notifies appropriate staff and redirect visitors to appropriate location. When transferring calls, informs the individual who is calling, and the nature of the call; does not transfer calls without an explanation; provides pager number of pathology staff when necessary and uses paging system when appropriate. Takes and distributes accurate, complete, and legible messages; requests proper spelling and ensures correct phone number by confirming with caller. Uses proper techniques when placing callers on hold. Always introduces self by name and title when contacting individuals outside the department and provides reasons for call. Ends conversations appropriately (i.e. waits for callers to hang up). Adheres to physicians' instructions and Center policies in relation to the release of any patient information.

For requisitions lacking required information (e.g. specimen source), calls or pages the submitting physician to request information.

- Experience Working in a Medical Office or Laboratory Setting required.
- Experience with Specimen Processing Samples (Accessioning) required.
- Data Entry skills required.
- Detailed Oriented required.
- Proficient with Medical Terminology required.
- Excellent Typing and Communication Skills required.
- Proven Ability to Prioritize.
- Able to Work Independently and Be a Good Team Player.
