About the Job
Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Chaplain in the Community Health department at our Hyde Park campus. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
The Hourly Chaplain, Part time, Temporary, provides pastoral and spiritual care to patients and their families, and staff, and functions as a resource to all staff concerning religious and spiritual matters pertaining to patient care. They will additionally participate in department projects as assigned and helps maintain 24/7 coverage as available.
Essential Job Functions
- Participates in the delivery of effective Spiritual Care services in support of all patients, their loved ones and staff, treating each person with dignity and respect
- Assesses spiritual and emotional needs and provides appropriate interventions in accord with the Standards of Practice of the Association of Professional Chaplains
- Maintains awareness and knowledge of current clinical issues or advances relevant to departmental decision making and functioning
- Promotes and has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol.
- Demonstrates respect/appreciation for persons served by the Department, regardless of background, race, age, sexual orientation, gender, religion or disability; treats all associates fairly and equitably; remains open to divergent opinions
- Serves as a resource for staff in providing culturally and religiously appropriate plans of care, based in patient and family wishes
- Administers sacraments and performs religious rites or arranges for appropriate religious representative to do so
- Performs other duties as requested by department leadership, e.g. project support, etc.
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate bachelor level degree from an accredited college or university, or its equivalent. Degree focus preferred in discipline relative to spiritual care
- One unit of ACPE certified Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is required, additional units are preferred
- Other experience considered might include other chaplaincy, religious leadership, or other area utilizing pastoral and spiritual care skills, or in the academic or clinical education process
- Able to take initiative on projects and tasks, able to use independent judgment/insight to solve problems, and able to take responsibility for outcomes.
- Demonstrates personal accountability, identifies own continuing education needs, and maintains current knowledge in their area of work
- Performs consistently within the code of ethics of the certifying bodies of APC and SCA
- Strong commitment to equity and inclusion in spiritual care
- Able to take initiative on projects and tasks, able to use independent judgment/insight to solve problems, and able to take responsibility for outcomes.
- Demonstrates personal accountability, identifies own continuing education needs, and maintains current knowledge in their area of work
- Performs consistently within the code of ethics of the certifying bodies of APC and SCA

Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate work in discipline relative to spiritual care
- Previous experience in hospital-based spiritual care
