Roles and Responsibilities:
The Chemical Technician is responsible for performing a variety of chemical analyses to support the safe and efficient operation of oil and gas facilities. The Chemical Technician will collect and prepare samples, conduct chemical analyses, interpret analytical results, prepare reports, and work with a team of engineers and technicians to ensure the safe and efficient operation of oil and gas facilities.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
This position is responsible for developing, planning and conducting the laboratory procedures for environmental, product, and process analysis in compliance with federal and corporate guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
§ Maintains protection of the environment, and the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products, as our highest priority.
§ Supports the safety process systems through participation in planned inspections, job observations, near miss reporting, incident investigation, area audits, and other programs as required.
§ Participates in daily operations meetings to communicate information related to safety, environmental compliance, quality, and KPMs.
§ Maintains laboratory skills, training, and qualification standards related to the procedures and processes required to support a knowledgeable and effective work force.
§ Develops laboratory procedures as required
§ Performs all analyses as defined in the Laboratory Procedures Manuals and Quality manuals.
§ Participates with other Lab Chemist/Analysts in troubleshooting problems with procedures and equipment.
§ Responsible for conducting quality control and environmental lab sampling, as well as verifying the accuracy of field operations lab sampling results.
§ Supports quality system through statistical verification of the operability and accuracy of instruments.
§ Performs the necessary duties to maintain housekeeping in the laboratory.
§ Initiates corrective action for process, safety, or environmental deficiencies.
§ Understands the use and location of emergency equipment in the laboratory and sampling locations.
§ Understands the emergency procedures as outlined in the Emergency Response Plan and related laboratory procedures.
§ Conducts each operation in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
§ Knows the types of personal protective equipment available and when and where to use it.
§ Ensures that all samples and chemicals are properly labeled.
§ Supports and performs the laboratory service function to include: storage of product samples, packaging and shipping samples, stockroom services to the laboratory and plant, and sampling services; along with maintenance of lab instruments and equipment.
§ Ensures a high level of internal and external customer service. Reports and follows up on customer issues and complaints, as appropriate.
§ Provides attention to detail, and dedication to work, in order to ensure reliability of the work site as well as a high quality product.
§ Assists with special projects as requested and work schedules allow.
§ Completes any additional responsibilities assigned by Plant Management.
OTHER FACTORS:
A. Assignment, Review and Approval of Work: The Lab Analyst is primarily responsible for his/her duties to accomplish the requirements of the job. He/she will work under the direction of the Lab/Environmental Supervisor, who is also responsible for performance evaluations for the Lab Analysts.
B. General: Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents and equipment data. Ability to work 40 hours/week, nights, weekends, and call-outs. Willing to cross-train and work in all areas of laboratory.
C. Relationship with Outside Organizations: Requires interaction with vendors, customers, regulatory agencies, and corporate personnel in a professional manner.
D. Specialized or Technical Knowledge: Experience in various areas of laboratory sampling and labeling. Experience in various analytical instrumentation including ICP, XRD, UV-Vis, Ion chromotography (IC), GC, particle size analysis, and tap and bulk density, titrator, and analytical balances. Familiarity with ISO 9000. Computer skills: SAP, Excel, Word (Lab LIMS experience preferred).
E. Relationship of Position to others in its Function: Requires close coordination with all area technicians and the Logistics Department.
F. Major or Unusual Problems: Laboratory operation requires the safe handling of several chemicals, including, but not limited to, chlorine, caustic soda, concentrated acids.
G. Sources of Support: The Technical Manager provides direction on overall laboratory, quality, and ISO systems. The Lab/Environmental supervisor provides direct supervision and support.
H. Decision Making Authority: In conjunction with the department supervision, this position is responsible for decisions pertaining to product quality, analytical results, and lab operation.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Education / Experienced Required: B.S. Chemistry and one year in an Industrial Analytical Lab setting preferred. Environmental experience (sampling and reporting) and analytical techniques preferred.
