Overview
Department 431's R&D lab is looking for experienced engineers looking to propel their careers in a multi-disciplinary hands-on environment. D431 test engineers take ownership of the full lifecycle of diverse test projects which offer practical professional development. Project opportunities include shock and vibration qualification testing; troubleshooting and repair of shipboard components; and development and testing of prototypes, system mockups, component test stands; and calibration of liquid flow meters.
Additionally, a number of shipboard components are operationally tested prior to installation. Tests frequently involve high pressure air and water, hydraulics, and electricity. Test stand designs developed by test engineers are manufactured and tested in the D431 shop. Most testing utilizes test instrumentation and data recording. All classes of submarines as well as developmental projects, such as IRAD and additive manufacturing, are supported.

Responsibilities will include the following:
- Lead a collaborative team of internal stakeholders and trade support for the full lifecycle of test projects including design of test stands, material sourcing, fabrication, assembly and test execution.
- Review and approve drawings and procedures, and author test reports at conclusion of testing.
- Independently manage large-scale or complex test projects and provide mentorship to less experienced engineers.
- Position may require occasional travel and work in outside environments and submarines, as the organization supports US submarine-related sites world-wide.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering or equivalent engineering degree
- 2+ years of related engineering experience
- Candidate must be highly motivated, able to perform with limited supervision, and have demonstrated experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Experience or knowledge working with and designing hydraulic, high pressure air, steam, and/or mechanical systems.
- Experience with shock and/or environmental vibration testing per MIL-STD-901D and MIL-STD-167-1.
Skills
- Experience with LabVIEW, component troubleshooting, procedure review/writing, technical writing, fastener calculations, stress calculations, GD&T review, weld design, and standard EB shipyard practices
- Candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
