The Bay Podcast Intern - KQED
San Francisco, CA
About the Job
Deadline to apply for KQED Internships is Friday November 8th, 2024. Please state which internship(s) you are applying for in your cover letter and apply to each one individually.
This is a paid internship, working 16 hours per week from January 21, 2025 through June 27th, 2025. Current Salary is $18.67 per hour.
Position Summary:
Are you passionate about local news in the Bay Area? Do you love podcasts and audio storytelling? Do you care about diving deep, beyond what’s in the headlines? Then come work on KQED’s podcast The Bay. Three times a week, The Bay goes deep on local news stories throughout the Bay Area.
We’re looking for an intern who cares about local issues, enjoys learning about a variety of topics, and is eager to learn how to make audio stories. This intern will assist with the production of Bay episodes, which includes working with audio and helping with social media engagement efforts.
The mission that drives us:
KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media. We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.
This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Essential Functions:
- Write copy for various platforms such as episode scripts, audio interviews, and social media messages
- Cut and edit audio in a digital audio editing software program
- Conduct research for an episode, an article or interview
- Record audio, potentially in the field, for podcast stories or interviews
- Attend and participate in editorial meetings
Knowledge/Experience Required:
It’s okay if you don’t know how to do all those things. We’re here to help you learn. What’s most important is that you understand how to write well, are interested in local journalism, and have an interest in audio as a way to tell stories.
We also expect that you have basic communication skills when speaking or reaching out to people you are not familiar with. That’s because you may be asked to make calls or send an email to someone you’ve never met.
Knowledge/Experience Desired:
It would be great if you had some experience editing or recording audio, but again, we can help with that. Some experience reporting a story would also be beneficial, but you’ll get that experience here, too.
Growth & Development Opportunities:
As an intern with The Bay, you’ll get the chance to peer behind the scenes of what it takes to make a local news narrative podcast. You’ll learn how to offer editorial feedback to peers. You’ll sharpen your writing skills, and deepen your appreciation for listeners.
