Responsibilities:Job Summary
Functions as a cardiothoracic surgeon (Surgeon) performing clinic-based and hospital-based medical services for patients requiring cardiology care and thoracic surgical services. The Surgeon provides comprehensive evidence based care to a designated patient population.
The Surgeon is responsible for patient care from evaluation in the clinic and the hospital inpatient, out-patient or emergency settings through the discharge of patients and/or discontinuation of follow-up care in the clinic setting and performs a variety of invasive tests and procedures to assist in diagnoses of and treatment of disorders of the chest.
The Surgeon is accountable for the delivery of quality measures that will provide excellence in personalized healthcare.
The Surgeon will provide effective communication to community and referring physicians to maintain a strong continuum of care for all patients.

- Clinical Care:
Provides clinic based services dealing with disorders of lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Provides hospital based throacic services incorporating evidence based care to improve quality of care, surgical outcomes, length of stay, resource efficiency, fiscal accountability, morbidity and mortality rates and readmission rates. Use open, minimally invasive or robotic surgical therapies options to best treat chest disease. Provides practice and hospital surgical call and stand-by services on a rotational basis, as assigned, of patients requiring thoracic surgical care in assigned facilities. Responds to emergency department calls within 15 minutes by phone and 30 minutes in person. Responds to inpatient consults within two hours. Provides others services as assigned to meet service line and organizational goals. - Leadership & Compliance:
Participates in establishing a positive rapport with the community based cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, oncologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists and referring physicians as well as with the emergency department, critical care department, nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy and other appropriate service areas. Participates in the recruitment and retention of HMG physicians. Facilitates and supports the mentoring of other physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. Creates a climate for professional practice with other disciplines. Supports the vision and values of the organization. Attends and participates in the CT Surgery Committee, Cardiology Committee and other service line committees as appropriate. Supports admission and transfer protocols, policies, procedures and guidelines related to the involvement of all cardiology, oncology, pulmonology and gastroenterologist subspecialists. Collaborates with the Chief of Complex Cardiothoracic Surgery, Executive Director of the Cardiovascular Center of Excellence, VP of Surgical Services and Service Line Administrators of Cardiovascular, Oncology and Gastroenterology to provide fiscal accountability for the affiliated service lines and services. Collaborates with Case Management and the Clinical Documentation Specialists. Utilizes Medical Director when necessary in difficult situations. - Research & Education:
Plans, coordinates, facilitates and participates in educational programs related to thoracic surgery services as needed. Participates in research activities within the cardiothoracic, oncologic and gastrointestinal and lung research programs for the purpose of improving the quality of care in the program. Collaborates with the Vice President for Research, Chief Complex Cardiothoracic Surgery, Executive Director Cardiovascular Center of Excellence, Medical Directors and Service Line Administrators to identify research opportunities associated with thoracic, oncologic, gastroenterology and pulmonary services. Participates with the Director of Medical Education and Medical Director of Academic Affairs to assure appropriate teaching opportunities for residents and medical students. Participates in the education of nurses and other ancillary professionals.
