Job Title: Tool and Die Maker 3
MISSION
General statements regarding the overall objective of the position
The Tool and Die Maker 3 is responsible for building and repairing custom machine shop tools using machining equipment and measuring instruments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
List of material responsibilities and essential duties which must be completed in achieving the objectives of the position.
Tool & Die Construction 60%
· Works from basic blueprints, drawings, sketches and oral directions to produce intricate progressive, and compound dies and tools, fixtures, jigs, models and parts.
· Uses shop mathematics, handbook formulas and a wide variety of precision measuring instruments
· Computes dimensions, plans layouts, and determines assembly methods and sequences of operations.
· Ensure that tools/ processes are set up within prescribed process control conditions
· With some supervision diagnoses and repairs all types of tools and dies. Performs machining operations using tool room machines.
· Selects cutting tools, holding fixtures, machine feeds and speeds, collets and lubricants and gear ratios for all kinds of metals and pieces to be worked.
· Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining
· Uses CAD programs to identify print information when needed
Tool and Die Maintenance 40%
· Sets up and adjusts dies to meet job book and quality requirements. Operates machines to produce samples for customers.
· Verifies all non-conformances with alternative measurement methods.
· With some supervision, performs root cause analysis and develops corrective action plans. Applies data driven logic to eliminate process variation.
· Uses SPC data to identify root cause and recognize trends and changes. Documents evidence to support root cause theory.
· Maintains the spare parts inventory for all tooling processes
· Performs precision grinding of all types of metals including carbide. Operates milling machines, lathes, jig grinders and all other tool room machinery. Works consistently to close tolerances of .001"as required.
· Heat-treats tools and/or parts
· Maintains related records, performs associated handling duties and maintains work areas in a neat and orderly condition.
· Grinds cutting tools as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 4 years of formal trades training or apprenticeship is required.
· 1-2 years’ experience in the maintenance, repair and construction of progressive, and compound dies, tools, jigs and fixtures and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
· Must have a thorough knowledge of machine tool construction and operations and the use of tools, machine shop practices, and the working qualities of materials.
· Strong manual and spatial dexterity
· Ability to read blueprints and understand diagrams.
· Must be a self-starter and have strong attention to detail skills
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer and MS Office Suite experience.
