We're looking for a Transmission Design, Manager to join our Electric Utility Design team at our Overland Park location (in office).
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and direction for a small team of engineers, designers and/or drafters to develop transmission line project design packages.
- Facilitate the development of transmission line design drawing packages which may include:
- Design Basis Documents
- Overall site plans
- Plan-Profile Drawings
- Transmission Structure Elevations and Details
- Foundation Drawings (including bolting/bolt-cages)
- Sag-Tension Tables
- Phasing Diagrams
- Grounding Details
- Detailed Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Lightning Protection Plans/Analysis
- Fiber Optic OPGW Drawings and Details
- Analyze various codes and client-required loading criteria including the selection and development of weather cases, load, and strength factors.
- Develop line tensions and verify adequate clearances during maximum sag and blow-out conditions.
- Develop Design Basis Memoranda (DBM), bid documents and material specifications.
- Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) in area of expertise, sealing design drawings as required.
- Create design criteria and material specifications appropriate for the designs, integrating client-supplied standards and requirements.
- Review vendor submittals and provide analysis/feedback.
- Effectively collaborate and communicate design requirements with other disciplines of the company including structural, civil, and survey.
- Develop proposals, scopes, conceptual/feasibility studies, cost estimates, and schedules to support awarding and execution of projects.
- Develop and maintain excellent client relations as a main point of contact.
- Attend client meetings to ensure the design meets their needs and objectives.
Requirements:
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- PE license in Kansas preferred (or the ability to obtain the license in a timely manner).
- 7-10 years of experience in Transmission design or related area.
- Ability to design the appropriate structure types, sizes, and configurations, working with steel pole vendors to develop “For-Construction” drawings and bid packages for various tangent, turning and dead-end structures.
- Ability to lead team in the selection of appropriate insulators and line hardware, as well as perform lightning protection studies/designs, and electrical aspects including selection of appropriate BIL and strength of insulators, line hardware, etc.
- Possess a mechanical/structural aptitude with knowledge of power system design and operations, to facilitate communications and interactions with the internal teams.
- Familiarity with Overhead Conductors as well as Optical Guy-Wire (OPGW) hardware and splicing equipment will be required.
- Knowledgeable on applicable codes and industry standards including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), Rural Utility Service (RUS) Bulletins & applicable IEEE Standards.
- Proficient with various software packages including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, CAISSON, SWrate, SAG10, AutoCAD, Mathcad, and other design tools.
- Working knowledge with design tools including Aspen One-Liner, ETAP, Osmose O-Calc, SKM Power Tools, Milsoft WindMil/LightTable, WinIGS, and GroundMat is preferred.
- Familiar with development of transmission line designs using PLS-CADD/Pole, development of alignments, integration of survey and LIDAR data, development of criteria files and feature class data tables.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to handle multiple project tasks. Excellent presentation, written communication, time management, and organizational skills are required.
- Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines, be self-directed, exhibit good business judgment, and handle confidential information appropriately.
- Occasional travel for site visits and client meetings may be required.
