Position Summary
The Lead MLW Technician assumes responsibility of phlebotomy/specimen accessioning workflow. The Lead MLW Technician obtains blood specimens from patients for laboratory analysis, observing protocols and methods established by The Department of Laboratories. The Lead MLW Technician unpacks, registers and receives specimens, preparing them for lab tests, while locating and correcting any discrepancies, and ensuring that specimens are preserved properly before forwarding them to the appropriate laboratory section. Performs customer service related duties as assigned. The Lead MLW Technician is responsible for overall training and competency of accessioners and phlebotomists on their shifts as well as troubleshooting issues that may arise.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Assumes responsibility of phlebotomy/specimen processing workflow Ability to obtain blood specimens using varied technique on all age groups (where applicable) Responsible to remove specimens from transport bags, verifies proper identifiers on all requisitions; and promptly follows-up on discrepancies or omissions on paperwork or specimens. Responsible for entering ordered tests from outreach requisition into HIS to ensure that the ancillary laboratory departments receive appropriate testing orders;prioritize workload to ensure the timely processing of all specimens. Responsible for labeling and dissemination of specimen to the proper laboratory department. Demonstrate knowledge and use of client specific registration and accessioning procedures Responsible for answering all incoming outreach telephone calls and responding in order to resolve call in an accurate, efficient and timely manner. Responsible for faxing laboratory results to physician offices as requested. To ensure seamless communication between shifts, responsible for documentation of all outreach issues in the LIS for follow-up and resolution the next business day. Review of the "Specimen Master Log" to ensure accuracy in the accessioning process. Responsible for compiling all necessary supplies for outreach clients and documenting quantities in the LIS prior to delivery. Maintaining Appropriate Inventory of Necessary Supplies - LIS Material Management System Completes ICD-10 diagnosis coding for all MLW outreach accounts by entering the appropriate code into the HIS; contact and follow-up with physician offices for diagnosis and/or ICD-10 codes if not provided on the submitted requisition; Documents phone conversation with physician office according to Medicare guidelines. Responsible for scanning all coded requisitions into the ELR of the LIS Responsible for STAT specimen pick-up at local physician office practices, as well as, dispatching contracted courier service Responsible sorting, compiling and delivery of laboratory reports to local physician office practices Demonstrates knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures and their execution Completes job specific competency requirements Maintains a clean and organized work area - Demonstrate ability to maintain a safe environment and use universal precaution Maintain supplies in a neat and orderly manner Ensures all client inquiries are responded to in a timely manner Performs all other related duties as assigned. Assumes competency and training assessments for accessioning and phlebotomy Responsible for troubleshooting and communicating issues that arise.
Prepares schedule ensure appropriate coverage based on workflow Education & Experience Requirements
High School graduate or GED equivalent required
6 to 10 years previous phlebotomy experience required Phlebotomy Certification preferred
Valid NYS driver's license and proof of auto insurance required Ability to type 35 words per minute
previous experience in a healthcare environment required Medical terminology preferred
Ability to use basic office equipment, basic computer skills, and knowledge of Meditech computer terminals a plus

- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SOS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SOS Access). A copy of the SOS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
