Job Purpose:
This position involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of standard tree trimming equipment including making minor repairs and adjustments. Tree trimmers are required to effectively operate several types of automotive, and related specialized equipment. Assignment for new or special jobs will be given in detail but repetitive jobs will be performed independently. Work is subject to review in progress or upon completion. This employee will report to the Forestry Supervisor.
Essential functions:
The following duties are normal for this position, but not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required as assigned.
- Prunes, removes and plants trees on city owned property
- Operates a variety of equipment including but not limited to, forestry aerial lift and boom truck, chipper, skid loader with a variety of attachments, front loader, snowplow, chainsaws, and a variety of manual pruning equipment
- Makes minor repairs on equipment operated and keeps equipment clean and functional
- Performs manual labor tasks
- May serve as a lead worker
- May be responsible for documenting work and keeping records
- Performs related work as required
Desired Knowledge, SKILLS, and Abilities
- Knowledge of tree care operations including but not limited to, pruning, removal, and planting methods
- Knowledge of basic and complex rigging systems as they relate to tree care operations
- Knowledge of the laws and ordinances regulating the operation of automotive vehicles
- Knowledge of the geography of University City and its park system
- Ability to operate a variety of heavy and complex equipment
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to perform manual work; work at heights, often under adverse weather conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, colleagues, vendors, and the public
- Ability to cope with frequent interruptions and adapt to changing needs
- Skill in the operation of heavy or complex equipment, and in making operating repairs and adjustments under emergency conditions.
- Ability to work autonomously and independently
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Excellent safety skills
- Basic personal computer knowledge
- Current & valid driver's license
- Current Class A CDL or ability to obtain during 6-month probationary period
- 3-5 years working in the tree care industry
- Arborist certification preferred
Overall Physical Strength Demands:
This position works mostly outdoors.
Travel between locations is required.
- Hearing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, climbing and lifting
- Concentrated mental and visual attention with normal hand-eye coordination
- Clarity of vision at 20 inches-corrected or uncorrected
- Occasional moving of items up to 80lbs
- Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions
- Ability to work from aerial lifts and raised platforms/ladders
