About the Job
The Triage Specialist in the Firearms section is responsible for clerical and administrative tasks related to the firearms section. The Specialist will also be responsible for assisting firearms section analysts in preparing evidence (including firearms) for testing. The Specialist will also assist section staff with validation and verification of instruments and methods. Generally, the incumbent utilizes standard procedures to perform tasks under the guidance and direction of section management or designee. The Specialist will exercise sound judgement to execute duties involving problem solving and maintain the confidentiality of all case files received. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Effectively utilizes appropriate tools for the tracking of calls, emails, and other stakeholder communication channels.
· Assists with case management, including creating and tracking case records and determining the disposition of court cases.
· Request, receive, and organize evidence meant for testing, ensuring chain of custody requirements are met.
· Communicates effectively with stakeholders regarding case information, ensuring responses are delivered in a timely manner.
· Monitor and maintain inventory of office and laboratory supplies.
· Assist section staff with validation and verification of instruments and/or methods.
· Assist section staff with preparation and preservation of evidence for testing.
· Performs other tasks as assigned.

Required Experience:
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in related field (administrative, forensic science, etc.) required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree. As job duties expand, the successful candidate may be required to gain Firearm/Toolmark Technician licensure from the Texas Forensic Science Commission.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of six months of mid to high level experience in the performance of work- related administrative tasks and customer service is strongly preferred. Experience in evidence handling in a forensic lab environment is preferred. Demonstrated ability and knowledge of different forensic software systems including, but not limited to: Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is preferred.

- Demonstrated skill in effectively utilizing technology and related software applications, with proven expertise in Microsoft Office applications and Windows environments.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging and dynamic work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with fellow employees, internal customers, and external customers.
