About the Job
The Federal Public Defender (FPD) is accepting applications for its Trial Investigator Internship Program. The goal of the program is to provide college students and recent graduates with the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the field of criminal defense by working with investigators in the Trial Unit of the FPD. This internship position is unpaid. Exact assignments will depend on the needs of the office and the interns’ areas of interest. Skills that interns can expect to learn from this opportunity include:
This 10 week internship begins June 9, 2025 and ends August 15. A minimum of 10 hours per week at our Los Angeles office are required. Scheduling is flexible. We are willing to work with interns who would like to obtain college credits for their internship.
Applicants must submit their resume, letter of interest, and unofficial transcript by January 17, 2025. Late applications may be reviewed but are not guaranteed consideration. Internship candidates will be contacted for an interview.

- An investigator’s role in preparing a federal criminal case for trial.
- Preparing an investigation plan.
- Locating and interviewing witnesses.
- Interview report writing.
- Methods for obtaining, deciphering, and organizing records and discovery.
- Using Open Source Intelligence Techniques (OSINT).
- An investigator’s role in developing mitigation.
- Serving subpoenas.
