Summary:
Through a common cultural identity and the use of the native language, the Native Language Tutor provides access to the learning process through the development of cognitive, academic and linguistic skills which will ultimately transfer to learning processes in mainstream classrooms.
Responsibilities:
- The Native Language Tutor is responsible for assisting second language learners experiencing difficulty in learning and/or acculturation.
- Facilitate the acculturation process by serving as a link between the culture of the home and the culture of school.
- Provide in-class direct instruction to individuals or small groups.
- Collaborate and coordinate with teachers in lesson modification, assignment completion and classroom instruction; provide instruction in the native language to develop concepts.
- Extend academic and/or conceptual levels; communicate regularly with classroom teachers and others about students' progress and assignments, and participate in conferences among parents, counselors, teachers and students as appropriate.
- Participate in bilingual team planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Bilingual Spanish/English (must pass BVSD assessment)
- Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English, must pass English component of interview process.
- Completed and submitted BVSD online application.
Preferred:
- Minimum two years college, Bachelors Degree preferred.
- Experience in education/tutoring/mentoring of children/young adults (ages 5-12).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff and administrators.
- Experience in working with children in a Core Knowledge setting.
- Positive communication, interaction, and work experience with diverse people.
Salary Information:
Salary Placement varies according to experience and education.
*Pay range listed above is for employees newly hired to BVSD or current BVSD employees that are new to the employee group (existing employees currently in this unit please refer to the pay range on the appropriate salary schedule). BVSD engages in a salary placement process vs. a salary negotiation process.
